EliteBook 820 G1
Linux

Hi there

I have a EliteBook 820 G1 with a Liteon 128GB SSD and a M.2. SSD 128GB in the "flash cache" socket.

So I now have two drives and both are working great.

Can I use the additional M.2. slot (where the WWAN card would go) to add a SECOND M.2. drive?

Thanks

Ed

The flash cache is not an M.2 socket it is mSATA like this:

The WWAN slot is however an M.2 slot. On some laptops, like the Lenovo Thinkpad T440, the M.2 slot can accept either a WWAN card or a hard drive. The Manual for the 820 G.1 is not helpful. The Thinkpad has no slot dedicated for flash cache, so I am going to go out on a limb and say that the M.2 slot on the HP is only for a WWAN, but it would not be too surprising if an M.2 SATA 42 mm drive would work. Those are a little hard to find, but available. Sorry I could not give you a guaranty.

Hi there

I think the "flash cache" is M.2 as I have an "ZTC M.2 NGFF Armor Series SSD SATA 6G 128 GB drive" plugged into it 🙂

The picture you show with the mounting screws either side would not work in the flash cache socket as the mounting screw is centered also 🙂

The HP Spec sheet for the 820 G1 specifies that the "flash cache" would be unavailable if the WWAN (M.2) socket was enabled with an SSD, but it was kind of hazy so wasn't 100% sure.

Many thanks for your asistance - All very confusing stuff - I wish HP would clarify things from the start!

Then are you absolutely sure it is a G.1? What is the processor?

It is an 820 G1 with an i5-4300U, it has two internal sockets, one smaller (for the WWAN) which has two antenna connector wires (loose) as it is empty, and one large named "flash cache" where I plugged in the additional SSD.

I did check that it was compatible before buying (I am sure) and it just plugged in and I saw it immediately although it needed formatting if I recall.

I don't like the G1 model as it is the only 820 that cannot be upgraded to an FHD screen.... and even an HD IPS screen replacement was hard to find.

For those wishing to upgrade their 820 G1's to IPS by the way I did a lot of research!!!!

30-pin EDP on right side

1366x768 IPS = Phillips LG LGD0404

compatible
730536-001 hp part-no =ips (= LP125WH2 SPxM2) = LP125WH2 SP M2

This is the ONLY screen that will be 100% compatible (and original part) for the 820 G1 offering IPS

LP = lg Phillips
125 = 12.5"
wh = wide format 1366x768
Sx = IPS
xP = 30-pins
M2 = model was manufactured for = not that important!!!!
but will indicate mounting brackets

don't buy:

HB125WX1-100 (non-ips)
B125XW02 (non-ips)
