Hi,
I have a custom Elitbook 8540p with a quad core i7 Q840 processor, and 2x2GB or RAM.
I wondering how many slots of RAM can I use (there is 4), and up to how many GB per slot?
I found conflicting info about this config.
PS: I bought 2x8GB that I put in slots 3 and 4 in addition to the 2x2GB, but they were not recognized. With the 2x8GB alone, the computer did not even start (no BIOS access).
Thanks for the help.

I made it work: I put the 2x8GB in slot 1&2 underneath the keyboard and the 2X2GB in the extra slots on the back of the notebook. The system (Linux) is indeed seeing 20GB of RAM.
I suppose the max would be 32GB.

Computers that use the system board with spare part number 595765-001 or 630294-001 have four
memory slots. On these computers, in both the expansion memory slots (on the bottom of the
computer) and the primary memory slots (under the keyboard), slot 2 cannot be populated if slot 1 is
not populated.
Put the two 8Gb modules in slot 1-2.
The other 2GB I think will not work that would equal 20GB and will not configure for that.

Hi REO,
Thanks for the answer. However, the info for the i7-840QM processor says 8GB max memory size:
https://ark.intel.com/products/43125/Intel-Core-i7-840QM-Processor-8M-Cache-1_86-GHz
Any comment on that?
