We have several Elitebook 8440p, 8460p and 8570p laptops. All are Win10 64 bit. I'm wanting to upgrade the RAM on several of them and I know that the 8400's use a different clock speed (1333) than the 8570 does (1600). But can I use one 8gb stick for instance, instead of a pair of 4GB sticks? Do I have to spread the RAM out or can I use the single stick? Is there an advantage to one configuation or another? Does it matter which RAM slot it goes in?
The Dell's I used to run were verrrry picky about not using 8gb without having both slots filled (2x4GB). Is HP the same way? Thanks!!

Thank you for the info! So, the 8460p list you gave shows configurations of 4x2, 8x1, and 8x2. What about 4x1? It currently only has one slot filled, with a 4Gb stick: is this a problem, other than being slow because of only 4Gb? Since it is operating, I guess it isn't a problem...
I appreciate the info you gave on the 8440p and 8460p laptops : some computers don't allow an 8x1 only a 4x2, so this makes updating our computers easier! More options available to us. Thank you again!

So, since you list 4x2 as the only configuration for the 8440p, I gather that we cannot utilize more than 8GB max? And 8x1 doesn't work on this particular machine? Thank you so much for the info: I wasn't able to find that in the manual!
