Microsoft Windows 11

I have 16gb internal memory. Is there a compatible external memory device for this notebook to augment the existing internal RAM? and if so what port does it connect to?

@wcjarvis,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

For all intents and purposes, no, there isn't: RAM is RAM alone.

If you are low on RAM memory, then you must upgrade your RAM, preferably with identical RAM -same brand, model, and capacity for best RAM performance.

For example, if your laptop is fitted with a single 8GB DDR5-4800 SDRAM RAM stick, you should aim for adding an identical RAM stick.  In order to find out what you got under the hood, so to speak, please type in cmd in your Windows search bar, then left-click on the Command Prompt System App, then click on Run as administrator, and Yes to confirm (if it asks for it).

Then copy/paste/enter the following command:

wmic memorychip get devicelocator, manufacturer, partnumber

Using my HP Zbook, you'll see something like this:

This will show you what RAM you got.

You can let me know what your part number is, and I'll try to find you the best place to purchase one of these RAM sticks.

Or if you need a lot more RAM, go for a matching 2 x 16GB RAM kit.

Kind Regards,

Thank you. That was very specific and helpful. When the computer arrives I will do just as you suggested. I ordered it with an upgrade to 16gb memory, which was the max offered. I thought that would be sufficient. But I recently learned that one of the programs I would like to use recommends 32gb ram, which is what prompted the inquiry. I will get back to you as soon as I can follow your instructions above. Thanks again!
