My laptop stopped recognizing my external wired keyboard. I checked and the ports are working fine and the drivers are updated. The keyboard is working with other laptops and other keyboards are working with my laptop but this one is not working

Hi @nilay4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP laptop is not recognizing an external wired keyboard, yet the keyboard and USB ports work with other devices. Follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Inspect the Keyboard:

  • Ensure that there is no physical damage or visible dust under the keys that might prevent them from functioning properly.

Test with Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand the "Keyboards" section and check for any error indicators (such as a yellow triangle).
  • If the keyboard is listed but not functioning, right-click on it and select "Uninstall device." Then, restart your laptop to have Windows automatically reinstall the drivers.

Check USB Connections:

  • Verify that the keyboard is properly and securely connected to a USB port on the laptop.
  • Try different USB ports to rule out the possibility of a port-specific issue.

Use Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Select "Keyboard" and run the troubleshooter to find and fix any issues automatically.

Check Keyboard Settings:

  • Ensure that the keyboard is recognized and configured correctly under Control Panel > Keyboard settings.

Update or Rollback Drivers:

  • Confirm that the latest drivers are installed. Sometimes, rolling back to a previous version of the driver can solve compatibility issues.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Restart your computer and access the BIOS/UEFI settings. Ensure that USB ports are enabled in the BIOS settings.

System Restore:

  • If the keyboard was functioning correctly before and stopped after recent changes, consider performing a System Restore to a point when the keyboard was working.

External Keyboard Testing:

  • Try a different external keyboard with the same USB connection type to verify it's not specific to a particular model or type.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
