Hp 15 AI laptop- just received my laptop today and it seems the fan has been coming on a lot even though the bottom of the laptop isn’t warm.

Hi @Jen2413

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how unsettling it feels when a brand‑new laptop’s fan keeps spinning up even though the system doesn’t feel warm to the touch. Thank you for noticing this detail and checking the bottom surface already.

Let’s go through a set of steps together to help manage the fan behavior on your HP 15 AI laptop.

Step 1: Check Windows Power Settings

  • Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
  • Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency.
  • This reduces background activity and helps the fan stay quieter.

Step 2: Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Outdated BIOS or system drivers can cause the fan to run unnecessarily.
  • Visit HP’s support page for your model and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.
  • Guide: HP Notebook PCs – Updating the BIOS

Step 3: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F2 to open System Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Test > Fan Test to confirm the cooling system is functioning correctly.
  • Guide: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows

Step 4: Adjust HP System Settings

  • Open the HP App on your Windows device.
  • Add your laptop and check for performance or thermal settings.
  • Select balanced or quiet mode if available.
  • Guide: Install and Use the HP App

Step 5: Reduce Background Load

  • Check Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) for apps using high CPU or GPU.
  • Close unnecessary programs to reduce system load.
  • This helps the fan stay quieter even when the laptop feels cool.

Step 6: Placement and Ventilation

  • Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface to allow airflow.
  • Avoid soft surfaces like beds or couches, which can block vents.

By following these steps, you can confirm whether the fan activity is linked to software, drivers, or background load. Starting with BIOS updates and power settings usually makes the biggest difference.

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
