Whenever I put my HP Envy x360 laptop in tablet mode, the fans don't turn on even if I have set the fan to be always on in system settings. This leads to it getting very hot. Is this normal? Is there a setting I need to turn on or off?

Hi @kaipatt

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining that so clearly—it’s definitely concerning when your laptop heats up like that, especially when you’ve already enabled the “always-on” fan setting.

It's common for laptops like the HP Envy x360 to exhibit different thermal management behaviors in different modes due to design and power efficiency reasons, including:

Tablet Mode Characteristics:

  • In tablet mode, many convertible laptops may manage power differently to improve battery life and reduce noise. This could involve limiting fan operation since the device may not be running intensive applications typically associated with fan usage.

System Settings:

  • Ensure that the power and thermal settings are configured correctly. Go to the Windows Control Panel or Settings, navigate to "Power Options," and ensure the cooling policy under "Processor Power Management" is set to active.

Firmware Update:

  • Update the laptop’s BIOS to the latest version, as firmware updates can optimize thermal and power settings.

HP Command Center:

  • Some HP laptops come with software such as HP Command Center that allows you to control thermal profiles. Check if you can adjust the fan settings here.

Driver Updates:

  • Ensure all drivers, especially chipset drivers, are up to date, as they can influence how hardware components respond in various modes.

Monitoring Temperatures:

  • Use monitoring software to keep an eye on actual temperatures to ensure they are within normal operating ranges. If it consistently reaches high temperatures, contact HP support for further guidance.

While it is normal for fan behavior to change in tablet mode, your laptop should not become uncomfortably hot.
