Hello @H8T3DJ4Y

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand that your HP laptop fingerprint sensor is not working, or the fingerprint driver may be missing. We will be glad to help.

If your fingerprint reader is not responding, missing from Windows, or you cannot use Windows Hello to sign in, the issue is often caused by one of the following:

  • A missing or outdated fingerprint sensor driver.
  • The fingerprint sensor being disabled in the BIOS.
  • A Windows Hello configuration issue.
  • A device detection problem within Windows.

The steps below will help identify the cause and restore fingerprint functionality.

1. Check if the Fingerprint Sensor Is Detected in Device Manager

This verifies whether Windows recognizes the fingerprint hardware.

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Biometric Devices.
  3. If you see a device such as Synaptics WBDI or Validity Sensor:
    • Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  4. If the fingerprint device is missing or displays a warning icon, continue to the next step.

2. Reinstall the HP Fingerprint Driver

Installing the latest HP driver can resolve issues caused by missing, corrupted, or outdated software.

  1. Visit the Official HP Support page for your specific HP computer model. Official HP® Support
  2. Download and install the latest Fingerprint Sensor Driver available under Driver – Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices.
  3. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.

3. Verify the Fingerprint Sensor Is Enabled in BIOS

If the fingerprint device is disabled at the BIOS level, Windows will not detect it.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Press Esc, then F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.
  3. Navigate to SecurityDevice Security.
  4. Confirm that the Fingerprint Sensor is Enabled.
  5. Save any changes and exit the BIOS.

4. Reset Windows Hello Fingerprint Setup

If the hardware and driver are working correctly, resetting Windows Hello can resolve enrollment or sign-in issues.

  1. Open SettingsAccountsSign-in options.
  2. Remove any existing fingerprint registrations.
  3. Select Set up to register your fingerprint again after reinstalling the driver.

After completing these steps:

  • The fingerprint sensor should appear under Biometric Devices in Device Manager.
  • Windows Hello should detect the fingerprint reader.
  • You should be able to enroll your fingerprint and use it to sign in.

If the fingerprint sensor is still missing from Device Manager after reinstalling the HP driver and confirming it is enabled in the BIOS, please let us know your HP product model and Windows version. This will help us provide model-specific troubleshooting and determine whether the issue is related to the driver, BIOS, or the fingerprint hardware itself.

Have a great day!
