I am wondering about firmware updates for my HP GA1 thunderbolt dock. Currently I am unable to use the suspend function on my laptop as the screen freezes when I wake it when attatched to the dock. Otherwise the dock works fine supporting a GPU and several monitors, ethernet and usb connections.

Specifically, is there firmware available, and is it independent of the OS or bios of the computer I run it on ? When I run my standard firmware updates I am told that no firmware is available for this device.

My OS is fedora33 which  regularly offers firmware updates for other devices.

Are you sure they (dock & machine) compatible ?

Regards.

Well both the laptop and GA1 support thunderbolt so that should enforce  basic compatibility. And it basically works - I can control the dock with software (bolt) and it drives a couple of monitors, ethernet, GPU, and several usb devices.

My understanding is that firmware is special software written to read-only memory that supports the driver controlling the device. Not sure whether it is written to the computer or device memory. I don't understand how responsibility for this is divided between the device and computer manufacturers.  I assume there may be tweaks needed to generic drivers to handle specific hardware.

Apparently the OMEN ga1 is discontinued and not supported. Seems that the none of the current docks can host gpu's or backup disks. So no expectation for maintaining or improving the firmware. Still I think this item had a useful function. Too bad it's gone.
