I bought the G5 dock and M24fw monitor bundle. When I plug the dock in, I get an error message saying "display connection might be limited". The online help does not explain very much. Is my laptop just not compatible with this USB-C type connection? It seems to connect in terms of sound as it switches the sound output to the headphone jack on the dock but that is it.

We need to know the exact model laptop
The most likely explanation is what you suspect. The USB-C port does not send out a video signal. The G5 dock requires a USB-C with an alt-DP output and your laptop may not have that.

It would help if you shared the details of your laptop, i.e. brand, model name, product number.
The minimum system requirements for the G5 dock are USB Type-C®️ (USB Power Delivery, Alt Mode DisplayPort™).
That means that the Type-C USB you are connecting to the dock must meet those minimum requirements.
USB ports generally have icons printed next to them. PD is USB power delivery.
Alt Mode DisplayPort specification can be found in a laptop's output port specifications.
