This error message makes no sense there is over 750GB free on the hard drive.

Anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks!

@bmrock,

The disk the error message is referring to is actually the EFI system partition (ESP), not the C: drive.

Your ESP is most likely 100 MB in size.

If you ever updated BIOS in the past, it created an HP folder on the ESP that contained an HP BIOS flash utility and its associated files as well as current BIOS files.

Your EFI\HP folder is probably taking up a lot of space thus your attempted BIOS update does not find enough free space to perform the update with.

You can, as the error message suggests, delete some files in the ESP to free up space, or enlarge the EFI partition (there are many YouTube videos for how to do it).

You can also try this workaround which may be easier to perform than the above two methods.

Create a BIOS recovery usb drive that contains the BIOS flash utility and BIOS update files. Then use the key press combination method (press Windows + B keys then power button) to boot the system to run the BIOS update from the BIOS recovery usb drive.

Click the link below and go to "3. Manually Recover the BIOS" then "Recover the BIOS Using a USB Recovery Drive" for how to run BIOS update from a recovery usb drive.

If you rather want to delete files on the ESP to create enough free space, click this link for how to delete stored BIOS files or the EFI\HP folder.

Thank you very much for your incredibly detailed and informative response!

I had a suspicion that this was a system partition issue but didn't know how to resolve it.

In the end, I elected to delete the HP directory in the EFI partition - seemed the least complicated of the options.

Thanks again. My issue is resolved. Much appreciated!

You are welcome.

Glad that you were able to update BIOS.
