I have a used older internal hard drive... HGST HDD: 1TB 5400rpm 5v 700ma DC SATA 3.0Gb/s. p/n:0J38013. So I've tried using it as internal and I receive no OS on disk no boot on device with an Code like... (03F0) Put bbot device on disk... if I make it to the UEFI settings the UEFI can't detect it. Quick test not on drive. Extensive test not on drive. And if I use it as external hard drive I can't detect it at all. Windows disk mgt. or cmd or PowerShell. also it does spin up and good too! and when plugged externally only! it slows or freezes the computer on boot. If it's plugged in the computer will freeze on any screen it's on. I tried numerous points during startup to plug it in and see if I could read it. ... on Linux mint mate 20 I can't find it on Grub or Disk or Gparted. No cmd like chkdisk or diskpart or recover has been able to detect it.My system is HP 2000-2d19wm Notebook PC I have 8gb memory 320 gb drive ie. Seagate I believe. which works fine internally and externally.
my question is! Is this just not compatible with my system? or is this HDD dead? Idk it's last owner it was a hand down found in a office or home I threw in a drawer. It does spin up. it does run the whole time it's plugged in. and idk Any pointers or help I would appreciate it.

It does appear to be defective, I would get your laptop back in running condition and use an external enclosure for the old drive, so you can run a full diagnostic with HGST's diagnostic tool. You can also use SeaTools in a bootable version on cd-rom or flashdrive. SeaTools can run advanced tests on any model hard drive.
