Hello,

I performed a small upgrade on an old HP 650 laptop by replacing the 2GB RAM with a 2x8GB DDR3 1600MHz 204-pin kit. The unexpected problem is that it's impossible to secure the RAM in the second slot, not even the (original) 2GB one. This is because it doesn't appear to fit completely, so the locking brackets can't engage and lock it in place. It seems strange that it's a manufacturing defect; I'm also ruling out a compatibility issue. But I really can't believe it.

@e1dwina, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP 650 laptop

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It seems like you're experiencing difficulties with securing a RAM module in the second slot of your HP 650 laptop. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to help address the issue:

Check RAM Compatibility: Although you mentioned ruling out a compatibility issue, it's crucial to ensure that the RAM modules are fully compatible with your laptop. Ensure that the DDR3 1600MHz 204-pin specification matches the laptop's requirements.

Inspect the Slot: Carefully inspect the second RAM slot for any visible damage or obstruction. Look for any bent pins or foreign objects that may be preventing the module from seating correctly.

Reinsert Carefully: When inserting the RAM module, ensure that it is aligned properly in the slot. RAM modules require precise alignment to fit securely. Gently press down on both sides of the module until the locking brackets engage.

Try Interchanging Slots: See if both RAM modules work in the first slot, if they do, the slot itself may be at fault.

Clean the Slot: Use a can of compressed air to clean out the slot, removing any dust or debris that could be hindering module insertion.

Check Physical Damage: Examine both the RAM module itself and the slot for any physical damage. A broken latch or bent connector could cause problems with installation.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
