HP EliteBook 840 14 inch G9 Notebook PC (4B849AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Last week i bought a new HP Elitebook 840 G9 (i5-1235u, 16Gb, etc...).

I want upgrade the RAM to 32Gb so, as i did in previous laptops, i bought 2 16Gb modules from Kingston.

When i installed them, the laptop doesn't start.

The caps lock blinks 5 times and nothing.

Tried one module, then the other, nothing.

At one point neither the original module works!

After a couple of tries, the original module started again.

In paper, as far as i can see, they have the same specs.

The original module is a Samsung M425R2GA3BB0-CQKOD.

The new modules are Kingston KVR48S40BS8-16.

Both are DDR5-4800, NonECC, SODIMM, 1.1v and CL40.

What i'm missing here?

Thanks.

I upgraded the memory successfully on my Elitebook 1040 G9 (Intel Core i7-1255U).

First I installed the latest version of BIOS. I used the 2x16GB Crucial CT2K16G48C40S5 kit.

After replacing the RAM modules, the laptop runs for about 2 minutes with the black screen and the fan at maximum speed.  But then it starts correctly.

2nd round

Using the kingston configurator, i bought one KCP548SS8-16 module, as recommended.

But, once again, no joy.

No boot screen and the capslock light blinks 5 times.

Here:

https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/model/105229/hp-compaq-elitebook-840-g9-14-inch

Part Number: KCP548SS8-16

DDR5 4800MT/s Non-ECC Unbuffered SODIMM CL40 1RX8 1.1V 262-pin 16Gbit

Any toughs?

(Besides buying an original module... their are very very expensive.)

Thanks.

The struggle continues.

HP support only sent me (again) the part numbers from their memory modules (with crazy prices).

Kingston is way more helpfull, they requested me to open a RMA case.

There are 2 new modules on they way here, let's see if they work.

Thanks.

Any luck on getting 3rd party memory working?

Not yet.

The first set of modules that Kingston sent also didn't work.

A second set is on their way, let's hope.

Did you try with others memory brands?

We got 64gb of Crucial RAM installed on Elitebook 860 and 840 G9 just fine.  Just let it sit on the blank screen and high fan for 5ish mins or so.  Then you get the prompt saying RAM size is different.  Then it boots just fine.

The wait time was the missing part.

The funny part is that no one appears to know this, neither HP nor Kingston.

But it's working now.
