HP 8560w CPU Upgrade

HP Recommended
HP EliteBook 8560w
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear HP and HP forum members,

I'm currently rocking an HP EliteBook 8560w with a core i5-2540M @ 2.60Ghz.

I can upgrade it to a Core i7-2720QM fairly cheap. But is it possible?

I'm also running the latest BIOS (F.63).

I would like to hear your advice!

Thanks in advance,

Roy

@rmw98 , @iomare and @Paul_Tikkanen

Well, well, well looks like 90% was good enough.

Took out the i5-2540M  and  installed the i7-2720QM

Now all I need to do is load an OS.

Hello David,

Thank you for your quick reply!

I have seen that in the service manual, but because some forums said that you need the "quad core" motherboard?

So it is not a problem that I currently have the "dual core" motherboard? Instead of the "quad core" version?

Thank you in advance,

Roy

@rmw98

Going from the i5-2540M to the i7-2720QM has a 90% success rate.

Your manual here.

Look at pages 23-24.

Hi, @rmw98 :

Your apprehension is correct.

In order to upgrade from a dual core to a quad core processor, you would have to exchange the motherboard for one listed in the service manual that supports quad core processors.

See chapter 3, page 24, item 18 for the list of motherboards, and you can see that they differentiate between motherboards for dual core, and motherboards for quad core processors.

So, if you try to install a quad core processor in the dual core motherboard, I would say you have a 100% chance of not succeeding.

So, without changing the motherboard, you can go to the i7-2640M.

Yes, @Paul_Tikkanen is correct. You will need to also change the motherboard. However I would not be so sure of the 100% he claims as it seem there are some people out there who have successfully installed a quad core on a dual core motherboard adjusting voltages and in some case hacking the motherboard. So maybe 99%:smileyhappy:

@rmw98

I have about 20-30 of the 8560w's.

If I have an  i7-2720QM CPU I will swap it and give you an answer then. (Next Thursday)
