HP ENVY 17-j184na Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all, hope someone can save me from throwing this laptop in the bin! I bought this HP ENVY 17-j184na Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) brand new a while back and whilst it was one of the most hottest running/thermal throttled laptop I have ever used, it's served it's purpose until recently.

I tried powering the laptop on after the battery went flat (with AC power) after a long time and within 1 second the laptop powered immediately off. (Fans spinned up and keyboard lights lit up and died immediately along with everything else. Power LED goes off and 6 seconds later comes back on.

No matter how many attempts. The laptop will turn on for 1 second (fan starts) and it all dies. It's like there is a short maybe and there is some sort of protection circuit that kicks in a second later.

I have tried the following:
1. Testing voltages out of power supply and adapter (OK)

2. Replaced the power jack on laptop (OK same issue)

3. Reseated CPU, RAM, Fan (done twice over same issue)

4. Checked voltages on CMOS battery (good voltage)

5. Unplugged non essential components from MB with no change (apart from trying without CPU and I just got the laptop running with solid lights but obviously not posting without CPU!)

6. Hold power button? No difference but doubted that was going to effect anything especially with CMOS and RAM removed anyway...

Anyway I seem to have some level of error blink code on the power LED so I am praying someone will give me some advise on this or know what I can test next...

1. With the battery connected and charger = Solid Orange power LED for 10 seconds then off.
2. Press power button, get continuous white flashing power LED (won't stop unless power pulled or button pressed)

3. Remove AC adapter but keep battery = 3 white flashes on power LED (Bad RAM? Doesn't make much sense.)

4. Plugged in charger and remove battery > solid white power LED

5. Switch on without battery = computer starts for 1 seconds (fans and everything) then it dies. Power LED remains off and only comes on roughly 5-6 seconds later.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a really bad feeling that the CPU cooked itself because the cooling on the HP envy i7 is NOT adaquete enough and I found the CPU cooking under load.

Thanks
