Hi i have a HP ENVY dv7-7300sg with an i5-3230M and would like to upgrade it with an i7-3630QM or better if possible, below is a link to my manual which i have spent time looking at to try to find the answer however being a truck driver it does not make much sense to me, i know that both the i5 cpu and the i7 cpu i have quoted are both socket G2 so i think it will physically fit but i am not sure??, and would i need a bios upgrade?
thanks guys

Just to let anyone know that may want to upgrade the I5 CPU in this laptop to an I7-3630qm, it is possable, I have successfully done the upgrade, stock cooler is fine with using a good quality thermal CPU paste, temps watching full screen video around 45c and system is very stable

One very important thing you need to check: Your existing i5 requires only 35W but the i7-3630QM needs 45W. You need to chack the System boards listed on page 77 of the manual to work this out. BIOS may be able to fix this otherwise you need new System board.
The latest BIOS is F.2E Rev.A dated Sep 9, 2016 for Windows 8 only
Regards.

The physical fit of the processor in the socket is only the beginning of the analysis. See the descriptions of the system boards on pp. 24-26? You have a computer with a 35W dual core processor. In order to support a 45W or Quad Core processor you need a different motherboard. The top 35W dual core processor is i5-3320M which is not enough faster than what you have to make the trouble and expense of upgrading make any sense.
Your processor is a solid performer: the way to make the laptop go faster is with a solid state drive in place of the hard drive. Post back if you want to discuss that.

Also i have just found this on Ebay (link below) its that same motherboard part number as mine P/N: 711509-601 and it was pulled from a HP DV6-7300 which uses the Intel Core i7-3630QM so i belive it will work in mine also as we share the same mainboard, i know the TDP is 35 vs 45 but i will use a cooler base and i can get the Intel Core i7-3630QM very cheap from a friend, so i will give it a go and let you guys know the outcome , thanks for your help
