HP EliteBook 840 G5 - GPU is not shown on the device manager / CPU temperature high
I have had this type of issue where my laptop GPU is not showing up in the device manager because what I looked up on the internet shows that this laptop (HP EliteBook 840 G5) has a discrete AMD Radeon™ RX 540. The task manager only shows Intel UHD Graphics 620.
I have updated all Windows drivers and HP support assistant. It shows everything is up to date. I even downloaded the AMD auto-detect software to detect but could not detect any drivers or GPU in my laptop.
My laptop specs are Intel i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, and 500GB SSD. System Board spare part number: L13688-601.
As for my second issue, my CPU seems to get very hot when I am using it normally browsing the internet and running work like Microsoft Office.
I use third-party software like Core Temp to record the temperature of my laptop. When idle, the average temperature is around 55 to 65 degrees Celsius. When I browse the internet, the average temperature ranges from 70 to 97 degrees Celsius. Sometimes it reaches 100 degrees Celsius. I am not sure if this is normal for this model of laptop.
Recently, I changed the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU units and also cleaned all the dust inside the laptop. Unfortunately, the problem seems to be the same. Nothing has changed, and the temperatures are still high.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The only time the discrete adapter will show up in the Device Manager is when it is active.
I state that from experience.

Thank you for your response, Erico. As you stated, "The only time the discrete adapter will show up in the Device Manager is when it is active." Could you please tell me how to activate the discrete graphics adapter?
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Right-click on a blank area of the desktop.
You should see a menu where an option for of NVIDIA or AMD control panel is present, depending on which one is present in your laptop.
Click on it and you should see the ability to make it active.
You will be able to select which applications will use it as the default graphics solution.
Watch the video below. The video discusses NVIDIA discrete graphics, but it is the same for AMD , if that is what your laptop has.

Thank you for your response, Erico. However, I cannot find the Nvidia or AMD Control Panel in my menu. I attempted to install the AMD driver on my laptop, but it returned the message "no AMD graphics hardware detected in my system." I also tried the HP software and drivers, but the issue persists, and nothing has been installed on my laptop.

When you run the HP{ PD Hardware Diagnostics to check the system board, what are the results?
From a laptop shutdown state, invoke the Diagnostics by pressing F2 immediately after pressing the power button.

The test results were rejected because they show your laptop's serial number.
They seem to be the old school diagnostics, not the one that are appropriate for a modern laptop such as yours.
You should install and use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Utility. It is far more helpful, as you will see when it is installed.
You have not stated which operating system you are running. That would help.
Here is a link to the software & driver web document for your laptop.
It is important for you to realize that installing video driver software from HP is the only way that the the discrete video solution will work. If you did not do that, it is likely to be the reason you are having issues enabling the discrete video.

Thank you for your response, Erico. Here are the updated results.

** Operating System:** Windows 11 Pro
** Version:** 24H2
I have tried multiple times to download and install the drivers from the HP website, but I still cannot install the driver. I also attempted to download the driver from the AMD official website, but it remains the same: the GPU is not detected.
Typically, when Windows detects any hardware changes, they should be visible in the Device Manager. However, I can't find my GPU listed there. In the previous photo I provided, the Display Adapters section only shows 1 GPU, which is the Intel® UHD Graphics 620. Even after revealing hidden devices, it still only displays 1 GPU.
Even after resetting the BIOS settings to factory default, there was an option in the built-in device settings labeled "Graphics" (UMA Graphics / Hybrid Graphics). The default selection was Hybrid Graphics.

Unfortunately, if the HP provided graphics drivers do not work, it means that the AMD graphics will not be available to you.
