I have a HP Envy 17 laptop, not too old, but for the life of me can't work out why the onboard microphone array doesn't work with apps.
I can see movement on the microphone in the Windows Sound settings but as soon as I switch to the device in an app, I get sound for 1-2 seconds and then it drops.
I've tried removing and reinstalling drivers as well as triple checking microphone privacy settings but still the issue remains.
The issue affects both teams and Zoom. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm using the headphone jack microphone as a workaround but it's not ideal.

Hi @george058,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the onboard microphone on your HP Envy 17 laptop is not working with apps, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.
Check the Microphone Hardware:
- Ensure that the microphone is not physically muted. Many laptops have a physical switch or button to mute the microphone.
- Make sure there is no debris or obstruction in or around the microphone.
Check Microphone Settings:
- Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings" or "Recording devices."
- Make sure the internal microphone is set as the default recording device. If it's not, right-click on it and select "Set as Default Device."
- Check the microphone's volume level and ensure it's not set to zero or muted.
Update Audio Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can cause microphone issues. Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest audio drivers for your laptop model.
Restart Your Computer:
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware and driver-related issues.
Check App Permissions:
- Ensure that the apps you are trying to use with the microphone have permission to access the microphone. In Windows 10 and 11, you can manage app permissions by going to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
Run the Troubleshooter:
- Windows includes a built-in audio troubleshooter that can help diagnose and fix common microphone problems. To access it, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, and then run the "Recording Audio" troubleshooter.
Check for Software Conflicts:
- Sometimes, third-party software or conflicting apps can prevent the microphone from working correctly. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed apps that may interfere with the microphone.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Make sure your operating system is up to date. Sometimes, Microsoft releases updates that include fixes for hardware and software issues.
Test with Another App:
- To determine if the issue is specific to one app, try using the microphone with a different application (e.g., use the Voice Recorder app or a web-based voice recorder).
Hardware Check:
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the microphone or the laptop's audio system.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP Envy 17's onboard microphone not working with apps.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
