Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased this notebook in September 2014 and had this issue of the case splitting at the rear left hinge in August 2016. The notebook has always been kept at a desk and never travelled except to get this repair done by HP. Now the notebook is just over 5 years old and this issue has started happening again even though it doesn’t move (I just open and close the screen).

I sincerely doubt HP (even though this appears to be such a well known issue) will repair the notebook again (sadly) so I am wondering what my options are to repair it, if this could be done myself by buying parts, or whether, being 5 years old, it is time to replace the unit? This notebook is one of 6 HP units in our house but if I have to replace this notebook I won’t be buying HP again.

I look forward to receiving any advice, thanks.

Of course it can be repaired. Needs new hinges (replace in pairs) and then has to be examined/diagnosed to see if any plastic chassis pieces are broken. And we would need the exact model number of the laptop in order to give any kind of detailed help.

I’m sure the notebook CAN be repaired my question was more is it worth being repaired due to age/cost/value/chances of happening again...

My notebook is a HP ENVY 17-j110tx Leap Motion TS SE Notebook PC.

Depends on how bad the damage is. It is a high spec machine still pretty competent and worth investing up to a couple hundred bucks I would say as a like kind new replacement is over a thousand. The hinges are inexpensive. Chassis parts can be pricey. Understand I do not work for HP. I don't really care if you buy any more HP laptops or not. I could fix your laptop and I can tell you how to do it as economically as possible. A lot of people ask about doing this repair but rarely does anyone stick with it to do the necessary evaluation and work to do the job correctly. Some will suggest glue and other halfway repairs but I do not recommend that. The only way to do this is to identify damaged parts and replace them. If you have to pay a technician to do this forget it. If you can do the labor yourself its possible for it to be economical.
