Hard disk failure 303 popped up on my mom’s laptop. We don’t have an external HD to back it up, so I followed the HP assistance bot’s instructions and performed a test on the hard disk. It failed with
failure ID: 0GC442-735AGT-MFGH6J-60XR13
how do I determine the meaning of this code?

The meaning is here:
0GC442-735AGT-MFGH6J-60XR13 | OK | xxx41008YY | 1/27/21 | 303 | Storage | Floppy Drive, Hard Drive, Memory Drive, Optical Drive, SCSI, Tape Drive | Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure |
Believe it or not that is all it means. You need to replace the hard drive. We have helped lots and lots of people do just that. Post back if you need that kind of help.

Thank you!
I’m thinking of replacing it with an SSD. Would there be any issues installing this SSD, and do you have any other recommendations as alternatives?

Perfectly good option. You can buy 2.5 inch SATA SSD on price; they perform pretty close across the board and all the major manufacturers; SanDisk, Samsung, even HP make good ones. Here is the Service manual:
Pages 40-43 spell out how to do it. Good luck.
