Envy

The power button is stuck on our HP Envy.  I see other postings about this issue. It is out of warranty (1.75 years) .

HP Support said will cost over $300 to repair.  Best Buy cannot estimate the repair cost because they have to send it out.

This is an expensive repair relative to the cost of the computer, which was $530.

I am thinking of taking it to a local computer repair shop, but have to admit being frustrated by this problem and the cost to solve it.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very interested to hear.

We need to know the exact model. One option is always self help but to evaluate that I need to pull up the right manual and determine how the power button is designed. In some cases its a separate removeable module that is not very expensive and in other cases its part of the motherboard which is a more difficult fix.

Thanks for the reply.  I took it to local computer repair shop and they said the power button is attached to the motherboard so to fix the problem will necessitate replacing the motherboard.  They are scouting prices for a motherboard, but it sounds like  the cost is going to be very close to the original price of the computer.  Honestly it seems like a design flaw that a power button repair would approach the cost of a new unit.

You are not doing much to help me help you. It might be a smart idea for you to get a free second opinion here and maybe another source for a motherboard. Also not clear how the power button got broken or exactly how it is broken. It is not a very common thing although not unique. But if you want any kind of information I need that model number.

Will post model no. when I pick up from repair shop.

Thank you for offer of help.  I picked up the laptop today and the shop noted two other things in addition to the power button/motherboard issue.  Damage to the casing as well as potential hard drive damage.  Given the extent of the repairs, we are going to replace the unit.

After this experience, I am going to buy the warranty with the new laptop.  We have several laptops in our family.  The one I use, always stays at home...migrates from room to room, but that is about it.  The one with the power button issue is taken to school so opens up alot more chances for damage.
