Suddenly the right shift key and the letter b key do not work on my keyoard. Occasionally the letter b does work. I have been using the on screen keyoard to type the letter b. The left shift key works. I also noticed that my shortcut keys up top must be pressed twice now. I have not installed any software and the keys look perfectly normal. I have tried turning on and off filter keys and going to settings but it didn't help. I do not know how to uninstall and reinstall keyoard. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? The keys look new so I cant't tell if it is a harware problem. The back of the laptop is sealed so I can't open it.

@PrettyMama (I'm sure you are!) 😉
Thank you for being a part of HP Forums, the place you can come back to, for any concern or query as we as a community are eager to help,
That said, It'll be an honor to guide you through the steps needed to identify your concern and/or address your query.
I recommend you attempt the below steps to identify the cause of the failure and resolve it accordingly:
- Try changing the keyboard layout/language and check if it works: Click here for steps.
- Clean the keyboard with compressed air (blow compressed air in the gaps between keys). This removes some lint and dust.
- Shut down the laptop, remove the battery and cable for a moment, press and hold the start button for 60 seconds
- Replace the battery, restart the notebook,
- if the issue persists, refer to my private message for further assistance:
Please check your Private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, using the blue envelope:
Click here for more details on how to access the private messages on HP Forums
Alternatively, if you've confirmed that this is a hardware issue,
you can find the part number on the HP Parts Surfer & replace the parts on the HP Parts Store.
Let me know how that pans out
I will have a colleague follow-up on this to ensure it's taken care off,
as I need to know if the issue has been resolved, to get proper sleep at night.
feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon,
followed by clicking on 'Accepted as Solution' as it would help the community gain more knowledge, and have a great day Ahead!

Thanks for your response. I will save your email with steps in case it happens again. Yesterday I did a hard reboot by pressing the power key since the back of this laptop does not open. It's getting more difficult to find one with a removable battery. I also ran the trouble shooter in the settings and uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard as well as turning off filter keys. I restarted. I did not think it worked but as of today keys started working. I will read over and save your instructions in case I have a problem again.

As I reported previously my b,B and right shift keys were not working. Then my f5 key stopped working and I believe F1-F12. After some research and following many steps including running the trouble shooter from the settings menu and reinstalling the keyboards from device manager (there are 3 on my device), I found that I was pressing the FN key accidently. This can activate or deactivae some keys. Upon pressing FN and F1-12 all keys started working again. Heres hoping they keep on working this time. On my HP Envy the FN key is on the left bottom. So it's easy to press accidently. My thanks to the forum. Hope my experience helps.

Thank you for responding,
This is the Riddle_Decipher, again!
I recommend you keep the device under observations and check if the issue reoccurs,
And if it all works fine and it's only an accident as you've mentioned, you may simply click on accept as solution on this post, to let us know that it's working fine,
However, if you have any issues as such, just follow the below steps as advised before and it should resolve the issue:
Update the system event utility driver as that's the most common interface for the function keys, however, there are a few other things you do as well,
Starting with updating the video adapters using the device manager and/or the HP Support assistant
Click the Start button, then click Run
2. In the Run window, next to Open, type MSCONFIG.
3. Press the ENTER key.
4. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab.
5. On the Startup tab, under Startup Item, ensure that there is a check in the HKserv checkbox.
NOTE: If HKserv is missing, reinstall the HotKey Utility application by clicking here & installing the BIOS and Chipset drivers, if the hotkey utility is not showing up under the drivers available for your device.
I hope that answers your query,
If it did, simply select "Accept as solution", to help the community grow,
And if you wish to thank us for our efforts, click on the thumbs up for kudos.
Have a great day ahead.

Yes I will check it for a few days to see if the fix holds. I did not find the system event utility or the HK serv installed on my system. Are they used in Windows 10?I will go to HP support to see if they are available if they are needed. Will let you know if fix holds in a few days.

I have accepted the solution but would like to add that the fn key was also involved. Pressing it by accident can cause some keys not to function as they did. So add that to the solution in case this issue comes up again. Thanks for your help.
