HP G5 245
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am having an uphill struggle proving the age of my laptop. The BIOS is dated 2015 but this could have been an upgrade. I have not owned the laptop from new.

I am concerned about the LAN speed from the "Realtek FE Family Controller." It shows really bad perfomance (wired) compared with a similar age Dell laptop that I have. If is is much older then that could explain it. Drivers are up to date.

However I am even getting conflicting results about this Realtek FE Family Controller specs too. Some sources say it is 10/100, same say it is 10/100/1000. HELP!

Its 10/100 that is what FE means (Fast Ethernet) as opposed to GbE which is 10/100/1000. 2015 is just about right for the introduction date. The Service Manual is copyright 2016.

OK Thanks Huffer, I'm surprised it wasn't 1000, still that reply saves me troubleshooting any more!

The spec sheet on the laptop does say it is supposed to be gigabit, but that device descriptor is definitely not. It's also a very generic designation leading me to wonder whether you have the correct driver installed. Can you find the Device ID in device manager? That is the alphanumeric designation of the specific chipset and will allow precise identification.

To find hardware ID for a given device, follow these steps:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Find the device in the tree.
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  4. Select the Details tab.
  5. In the Property drop-down, select Hardware Ids or Compatible Ids.

Indeed we seem to be on the same page.............

I've run Update Driver in Device Mgr. I also use Drivermax just in case. These vague generic device names whether Realtek or others can be a nightmare 🙄

which is confusing for me as well.Compatible ID NIC.PNGHardware ID NIC.PNG

And if I go into Network Connecns Ethernet Properties I see this..........

Mystery to me. The laptop specs say it has gig ethernet but in reality its only fast.

Does anyone know how I can query/complain about this to Hewlett Packard UK, pref by email? They are hardly likely to send me a new laptop but the least they can do is explain themselves to all of us as to why specs on their site are false 😡
