You won't notice an incredibly significant gain between the P9700 and P8400 in 3D processing because the vast majority of the 3D processing is done in the video card.  Unfortately the nVidia GT130 is the best video card for this laptop.  It's not a bad video card but there are quite a number of newer/better video cards in other laptops.

If I can save you a little time, the video cards in laptops are not swappable like the ones in desktops.  You're pretty stuck unless you got a different laptop.

Thanks

if i find a p9700 at a good price i'll change mine...

at first i want to change to a quad core and then to t9900 and in final to P9700 lool

after many research.. i decided to keep my p8400 4 the moment... cause the P9700 is too expensive and if i realy need something it's video power... i don't use the cpu as much as that... p9700 will be very nice but i think i will be disappointed...

or may be not... for 300 $ i think so lol

i know the gain from a single core to duo and duo to quad... the frequency is not a big big gain it'as why i'am :s

i check external gpu 4 laptop it's funny lol

...

any way... thanks

is there an intel usb cpu ? 😛

While the jump to a dual core from a single or quad from dual is not going to give you much of an increase in frequency, you are doubling the number of processors.  I would take a 1.8GHz quad core processor over a 2.2GHz dual core any day.

You wouldn't want a USB processor anyway... talk about sllllloooooooowwww.  hehe

hi...

i decided to buy a P9700...

i'll take a QLMA version i did not find an oem version... do you use a QLMA version ? did you get trouble since you installed it ?

i'll post the exact change of performance and change on battery ! from a P8400 (25W)

😉

HP Recommended

is it possible to install the P9700 and the my actual P8400 at the same time ... to get a quad !!!!!! WWWWooowww

looooooooooooooooool

it's dam n awkward that i have to keep my old Samsung 4 GB Ram, My old HDD and now My CPU all this is money... 😞 but i have to keep it for the waranty...

HP Recommended

I'm running the QLMA version... no trouble with it.  You're going to need to run some benchmarking software just before and just after you change the processor if you want to get exact performance differences.  Battery life will be difficult to measure, but there  is benchmark software out there.  I suspect you'll get something within a few minutes of each other.

As for memory, I'm not sure I understand why you think you'll void the warranty if you replace the RAM but not replacing the CPU.  You just won't have warranty on those components.  Everything else is still warrantied.

i was told by hp support that if i have to send back the computer under warranty i have to send it with the original hardware... most of case the computer is replaced... in the case the computer is just repaired the idot technician will say we could not repair hardware not coming from hp... even if these hardware is not defect (example motherboard defect not CPU nor ram)

i was told by hp support that i can modify my laptop hardware but if i have to send it back, the computer have to be as hp sold it to me...

it's why i have to keep my old hardwares...

I'am very happy i'd just installed a P9700  i'am happy with this choice even if a t9900 will be good also...

i'll post a complete comment in 2 hours after final tests...

Changing CPU From P8400 To P9700 Report :

My Old Config :

HDX 16
nVidia 9600M GT 512M
Intel P8400 Core 2 Duo (2.26GHz) @ 25W
8GB DDR2-800
500GB @7200

My New Config :

HDX 16
nVidia 9600M GT 512M
Intel P9700 Core 2 Duo (2.80 GHz) @ 28W
8GB DDR2-800
500GB @7200

Old Windows 7 Performance report :

CPU ------ 5,7
Ram ------ 5,8
GPU ------ 4,8
GPU II ---- 6,1
HDD ------ 5,9

New Windows 7 Performance report :

CPU ------ 6,3
Ram ------ 6,3
GPU ------ 4,8 (Did not change)
GPU II ---- 6,1 (Did not change)
HDD ------ 5,9 (Did not change)

Battery Performance :

I tested battery perfomance under :

- Normal use (Firefox + MSN + Windows Mail + many background softs)

- With 6 Cell battery (i did not make the test with my 12 Cell don't think it's useful)

- I made the test with Win 7 Full Performance activated

- Without aero

- With external screen + Keyboard

The Result :

- The result IS THE SAME !!!!! 85 Min with P8400 @25W and P9700 @28W

Conclusion :

i think the battery time is the same cause I'm not using full burning test.

Thinking about this, may be a T9900 will be fine 4 me lol

- PS : Usually my 6 cell bat stay ~ 60 min with integrated screen on win 7 full performance enabled

- PPS : On linux it stay a lot more...

- PPPS : Result is 85 min till 15% battery

Time to mount the CPU + Cleaning the computer :

5h (i'm very thorough with my laptop)

if you only mount the cpu without cleaning etc it take about 45min

Used Guide to Mount - Unmount :

Full complete HDX16 manual from HP

Temperature Performance :

- I got my computer 2 years ago + - , never opened it as deep as CPU place...and never replaced CPU temp pomade (CPU Temperature Greace) so my computer get a little hot... i don't think this part is really a comparison cause of the CPU/GPU/Chipset old greace... i placed the new P9700 with special new temp greace and i get better temp. performance than my old P8400 it's why the compareson is not really good, if i put the greace on my P8400 i will get better temp...

Any way i put the greace on the CPU/GPU/Chipset...

Temp Testing Condition :

1- After 60 min of start without nothing

2-  After 60 min using : msn + firefox + skype + mail

3-  After 60 min + External cooler + Using  : msn + firefox + skype + mail

P8400 :

1- 50° ~

2- 55° ~

3- 50° ~

P9700 :

1- 42° ~

2- 45° ~

3- 42° ~

Thing to check after mounting (Check List) :

- Audio Speaker

- Finger print

- Bluray Player

- Wifi

- Bluetooth

- Webcam

- TV Tuner

- Touchpad

- Touchpad lock

- Integrated Microphone

- Capital lock led

- Num lock Led

- Shortcut buttons (Quicklunch)

- CPU Fan

- HDD Fan

- Sub-woofer

- Audio external Connectors

- USBs Connector

- Device manager (Under Windows)

Conclusion :

P9700 is a very good choice and a good product, at 28W, cheaper than T9900, powerful etc...  but i think if i took a T9900 i will not be disappointed even if it's 35W cause we never use our CPU at 100%

Comment :

My laptop is almost full full full good :D, but

next buy :

- Blacklit keyboard (i could not find french verison :'(

- May be a T9900 will decide in some days (time to test P9700)

lol

Comment II :

- The best improve on performance for the HDX16 :

Hard drive from HDD@5400 -----to----- HDD@7400

The performance gain is wonderfull (30% or more) and the temp is the same sometime less... the only thing is less battery

i tested a samsung 300GB@7200 and now i'am using a Hitashi-500GB@7200

The hitashi is coolest comparing to the original and the samsung

The battey lose is about 15% ~ depending on what you are doing... but the power gain is too big !

nVidia GT-130M
Intel P7550 Core 2 Duo (2.26GHz) @ 28W
4GB DDR2-6400 (400 MHZ)

I really want to upgrade the processor to X9100, can anyone please help me out if the HDX 16 will take Intel X9100? will the processor get overheated? Has anyone done a similar upgrade before?  Please Advice!!!!!! Thanks to everyone who is willing to help.
