I'm having problems with the keyboard. When I typed the letter 'o', it gives me 'QERWIUPO' with caps lock off. When I typed letter 'l', it brings me to a new tab. When I typed '.', it gives me "<ZCVX<M? >". Besides that, I can't type numbers. It will give me the special characters. For my on screen keyboard, I can't type numbers, it gives me the special characters.

@VincciTsen,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you need assistance with the keyboard issue.  I will be glad to assist you here.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Could you provide me with the exact product number of the keyboard/PC? Use this link to find it:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824  (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Have you tried to connect an alternate USB keyboard and check if that works?

In this scenario, I would personally suggest this could be a possible hardware failure, I would recommend you try these steps here before contacting the place where you have purchase this keyboard or contact our HP phone support for further assistance.

For a start please perform these steps:

  • Please uninstall and reinstall the keyboard drivers from device manager.
  • Right-click on start> Right-click on device manager> Expand Keyboard option>Right-click on the keyboard drivers and click on Uninstall.
  • Then restart the computer and check if the issue gets resolved.

If the issue persists, please try these steps here:

  • Power down the unit. When you power it back up, immediately tap the F11 key gently several times.
  • It takes you to recovery manager. Here please select the option “Troubleshoot”. Then please select “Advanced options “ and  “command prompt”
  • Type all the keyboard characters in this black window especially the keys that do not work correctly.
  • If F11 does not take you to recovery manager, please keep tapping the “ESC” gently several times the instant you power on the unit. It takes you to the startup menu and you could press F11 from there to go to recovery manager. Please check all the keys in the command prompt black window, especially the keys that don’t work.

If it does not work in the command prompt (Black window) then it is a hardware issue with the keyboard. For further assistance please check this link out: HP Notebook PCs - Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting (Windows 10, 😎

If the issue persists, I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for further assistance.

@Conderdonk, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tried connecting an external keyboard and check if the issue persists?

Run a diagnostic test on the Keyboard

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. Perform Component Test > Keyboard. Share the result on your next post.

Also, Install updates using HP Support Assistant

  1. In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. Check for updates.
  3. If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Note: If you do not have HP Support Assistant installed, Click here to download the same.

Let me know how this goes.
