Hp pavilion 14-bf172TX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to upgrade my laptop ram (Model- Hp pavilion 14 bf172TX). It has previously installed 4gb ram on one slot and other slot is empty. I want to add an 8gb ram on empty slot. So total memory will be 12 gb.  But  I don't know how much maximum ram it supports and is it create problem if I add an 8gb in other slot because one slot has 4gb and other slot will have 8gb. I think it's kind of bizarre because every time we see each slot has same amount of memory.

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05527168

The memory upgrade info can be found in chapter 1.

Your notebook supports a max of 2 x 8 GB of memory.

it is fine to add an 8 GB memory module in the empty slot.

The memory will continue to run in the lower performing single channel mode because you need to have matching capacities of memory for it to run in the higher performing dual channel mode.

That is why you normally see both slots filled with the same capacity memory.

Someday you may want to remove the 4 GB memory chip and replace it with an 8 GB memory chip, but it is not necessary to do so.
