Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

As of a few days ago, my HP Notebook will not charge when it's switched on and will only charge when switched off or in 'sleep mode'.

When switched off and the adaptor is plugged in, the charging light will be a still orange however when plugged in while the laptop is switched on, it will be a still white and won't charge.

The battery icon on the task bar doesn't say "plugged in, not charging", it just doesn't say anything as if the laptop isn't charging at all.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Let's reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery

Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

Also update the BIOS from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Keep me posted how it goes 😊

Hi, thank you for your help.

I followed your steps, which managed to fix the issue. However, I updated the BIOS as you suggested but upon the laptop restarting, the laptop went back to not charging when switched on!

Update: I ran through the steps again, which worked before, after updating the BIOS and it still isn’t charging while switched on.

Any further help?

Cheers

I suggest you start with a hard reset: Click here for steps,

When done, you may want to check with an alternate power cord/adapter as it could be a malfunction that's causing this issue to occur, here's what you could do:

If the charger shows inconsistent power output values, I would suggest that you step into Best Buy or staples and try with a different adapter and that should isolate the issue to the adapter or the computer.

Please try a different battery on the unit as well.

Do not buy the battery and adapter. It is only for testing.

Use spare ones that they may have. If it works correctly, then you could think of buying it.

Meanwhile, also, try the below:

Steps to uninstall the ACPI drivers

Right-Click on start button> click device manager> Batteries>then select the s drivers and right-click on it and uninstall all battery drivers.

Then restart the computer and check again.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried to do a hard reset by removing the battery, holding the power for 15 seconds etc. but this hasn’t seemed to do anything with the battery. Uninstalling the battery drivers and restarting didn’t work either.

I ran a battery test through the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics and it came back as ‘passed’. I tried to run one on the AC Adapter but this failed as expected, as the laptop isn’t picking up that the adapter is plugged in and charging.

Unfortunately I don’t have any spare adapters or chargers to test - but as it worked previously before I did the BIOS update - I believe that the adapter and battery are fine.

Not sure if there’s any more I can do from here but any more help would be appreciated.

Cheers
