OMEN Laptop - 15-en0006na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The "R" key on my keyboard is not working and it seems like many people who bought the HP OMEN 15 2020 are facing the same problem. Note: I am pressing all the R's in this post using the onscreen keyboard. And only one who faced such problems knows how painful is this.

For the last year, I've taken the best care possible because I use this laptop for my studies. I've used external keyboards most of the time and used a plastic cover for the laptop keyboard. But recently I needed to go somewhere remote so I didn't bring my keyboard. After using my laptop for some time, I realized that I cannot type the letter R with my keyboard. Then I started panicking and googled the problem and found that this is a very widespread problem and several people faced this.

I tried all the troubleshooting techniques starting from reinstalling drivers to BIOS updates mentioned in the forums, but no luck. I currently have only 8 days warranty left but I can't send it right now because I bought it from the UK and currently can't go back because of Covid.

Here is an old Reddit post that mentions many sources of the same problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hewlett_Packard/comments/l39ghy/hp_omen_2020_global_defect_keyboard_keys_no...

Thank you for reading this whole post, and any assistance or guidance regarding this would be much appreciated. 😞

Hi @AFourTeen, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand the keyboard some keys stopped working on your PC.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes your PC?

Let's start off by performing a Hard Reset -

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.

3) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.

4) Plug-in the Adapter.

5) Try to turn on the computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Update the BIOS and chipset driver on your PC and check if it helps.

Thanks for replying.

I've followed all the instructions above and still, it doesn't work. I believe it is a hardware issue and not software related. You can see the video I created about this in the link below where I test it using the HP startup menu's keyboard testing utility.

I have about 5 days warranty left from the 1-year warranty. And I cannot send it because I am currently in another country, and HP warranty services aren't available here. But I will be back in the UK (where I bought the laptop from) in approximately 1.5 months.

Hi@AFourTeen,

As this is a hardware issue, I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.
