Did this happen after a Windows or display driver update?
Had you considered using Windows System restore to return your laptop's OS to the state it was in before this problem began?
Choose a Restore Point dated before the problem began.

Haven't done a system restore exactly but did reset my windows 11 and even went back to a fresh new copy of windows 10 (which I am currently still on) but the issue still remains.
As far as I know the issue didn't start after any system or driver updates. What I think might have caused it (and I am not very sure about this) is that I saw a process in the task manager which was taking up alot of my RAM. It was called something like 'service host: Game dvr and broadcast' . I clicked end task on that process and I suspect that is the reason this all began (again definitely not sure just a guess)

The "service host: Game DVR and broadcast" is just a service which allows screen recording during gaming.
That service is unlikely to have caused the issue.
I suggest not using DDU. Some people have reported that it can cause issues.
If you can still see the NVIDIA GPU in the Device Manager, I suspect there is either a registry problem or a Windows OS issue that is causing the inability to install the NVIDIA drivers.
I suggest trying the HP NVIDIA drivers for Windows 10 from the driver support portal for your laptop. again. Don't use the drivers direct from NVIDIA.

well then I'm completely lost. I've tried multiple different solutions but none of them worked. I can't run any games anymore cuz they all use the integrated amd gpu and run very poorly. I am at a loss as to why this happened in the first place.

Ok.
I know it is a bit of a pain, but I suggest trying a clean Windows 10 install again.
Afterwards you can try installing the HP Windows 10 NVIDIA driver.

ok so I tried installing the nvidia driver again from the link you provided even though I have already done this alot of times now but I noticed that a command prompt window opens up saying 'The system cannot find the path specified' it closes after a short time and then nothing else happens. The hp support assistant application says the driver is installed and closes. I tried the same thing but with the AMD graphics driver this time and and the command prompt window opened up and I could see it doing stuff and writing things and at the end said driver installed successfully. The screen also flashed a few times indication that indeed the driver is being updated, whereas there was no screen flashing while installing the nvidia driver. All this leads to me to believe that the drivers are somehow not being installed properly. I have also already tried installing a fresh copy of windows 10 so that didn't help either.

So you do not feel it is worth giving it another try?
You and I may be different in that I am a bit obsessed when I encounter PC hardware or in an operating system that is not working as expected.
I would rather try to fix it, than buy another PC.
