OMEN 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop PC 15-ek1000 (2B1J9AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

have an OMEN 15 with an i7 and rtx3070 with windows 10. Recently my laptop has been freezing, then it would automatically reboot, and sometimes not being able to boot up right away and just keep a black screen. The odd thing is it was doing this under very light loads, typically when I am working and have 5-7 browser tabs open. So far I did the following:

  1. Reinstall windows
  2. Reinstall all drivers and updates
  3. Clean the notebook the back plate and fans and interior
  4. Get a cooling pad
  5. Ran various system tests (quick ones, memory tests, processor tests, etc) they all passed and didnt find any issues.

This seemed to have alleviated the problem slightly. It does not crash as much (still does it every hour or two), but now instead of freezing and then rebooting, it just freezes and I manually have to reboot it. All the fans are working great and like I mentioned I got a cooling pad. The weird thing I noticed is when the computer is not under heavy load, the CPU load and temperatures are really high.

My warranty is now up and I am also out of the country so cant take it or send it to a HP facility. Before I left (about 5 months ago) I did send the notebook in because a fan was making a funny noise, they tested it, replaced the fan. Any thoughts as to how I can fix the freezing and lower the CPU load / temps?

Hi @Karl88,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Experiencing freezing issues and high CPU temperatures/load on an HP Omen laptop can be frustrating, but there are several potential solutions you can try to resolve these problems. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.

  • Check for Dust and Clean the Laptop: Dust accumulation inside the laptop can hinder proper airflow and cause overheating. Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean the vents and fans.
  • Update Drivers and Software: Ensure that all drivers and software are up to date, including the graphics card, chipset, and BIOS. Visit the HP support website for the latest drivers.
  • Adjust Power Settings: Make sure your power settings are not set to "High Performance" constantly. This setting can keep the CPU running at maximum speed, leading to higher temperatures. Try using the "Balanced" power plan instead.
  • Close Unnecessary Background Applications: Running too many applications simultaneously can increase CPU load and cause overheating. Close any unnecessary background processes.
  • Check Task Manager: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and see which processes are consuming the most CPU resources. If you notice any unusual activities, consider uninstalling or disabling the related applications.
  • Scan for Malware: Malware can cause high CPU usage and system instability. Perform a full system scan using your preferred antivirus software.
  • Adjust Fan Settings (Advanced Users): Some HP laptops offer fan control options in the BIOS or through software. You can try increasing the fan speed to improve cooling.
  • Use Cooling Pads: Investing in a cooling pad can help improve airflow and reduce CPU temperatures.
  • Reapply Thermal Paste (Advanced Users): If you're comfortable opening your laptop and have experience with hardware, you can reapply thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Over time, the thermal paste may deteriorate, leading to poor heat transfer.
  • Check for Background Updates: Certain applications and Windows itself might be running updates in the background, causing increased CPU usage. Check for pending updates and let them complete.
  • Factory Reset (as a last resort): If the issue persists and you've exhausted all other options, consider performing a factory reset to start with a clean slate. Remember to back up your important data before doing this.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
