My daughter's HP Omen will not start. It just sits on "Preparing Automatic Repair". I have run the HP diagnostics, and the Hard Drive continuously fails the "Short DST Check" with a Failure ID "PSG788-8SB985-MFPURF-60RE03". I believe this indicates that there is a Hardware Failure on the Hard Drive. Can someone confirm my thinking? The HP Omen is beyond its warranty date so this will likely mean that I will need to purchase a new replacement hard drive. The Drive is part ST2000LX001, which is a 2 TB drive. Any suggestions on a replacement?

Hi:
You are correct.
The error code reported, Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure, means the hard drive needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the HDD R & R procedure.

If your daughter doesn't require 2 TB of storage space and can live with 500 GB, I would recommend replacing the drive with a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive (SSD).
I have this one for example, and it works great.
It appears that model is supported by the HP cloud recovery client utility, but I am unsure if you don't replace the drive with another 2 TB drive, that it will work.
Here is an info link on how to use the cloud recovery client utility.

If you decide to get a smaller size SSD and the above utility doesn't work, you can always clean install W10 using the Microsoft media creation tool to create a plain W10 USB installer.

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
