Hi,

My laptop has HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI v2.2.8.0 which doesn't have the "Firmware Management" option. I've installed v9.0.0.0 (available at https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/hp-pc-hardware-diagnostics) with no errors, but when I select the "System Diagnostics" option in the boot menu (F2 key), the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI still shows v2.2.8.0.

Can anyone help me on this issue?

Thanks!

For some reason, the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI is installed in "C:/Windows/HP", as also reported in this post by Denis_F. In my case, as a partition named "HP_TOOLS" doesn't exist, the install instructions should ask to create one, as described in the documentation. No instruction is given to create such partition.

Help would be appreciated!

@Ddinis,

HP PC Diagnostics UEFI is actually installed in the efi partition, which stores the boot system (Windows Boot Manager). The screenshot below shows what's in the efi partition on my Pavilion laptop. The Diags UEFI, when installed, creates \HP folder and places 3 subfolders, BIOS, BIOSUpdate and SystemDiags. the BIOSUpdate stores BIOS update utility, and the SystemDiags carries the diagnostics tool. The \Boot and \Microsoft, seen at the bottom of the screenshot, are the boot folders.

See another screenshot below of the C:\Windows\HP folder of my laptop. It seems to me that this folder acts like a staging area, where the Diags UEFI setup unpacks all the individual files. Note the "Installer" file in the screenshot. I believe this app is responsible to complete the installation of the Diags UEFI to the EFI partition.

My guess is that when you tried to install the Diags UEFI, somehow this Installer didn't kick in and therefore the installation was never completed. So, try to run this app manually and see what will happen. Let me know how it goes.

Dear @tk_srq,

Thank you very much for your attention.

I've cleaned installed Windows 11 in a formatted disk. I believe the issue lies in the fact that the EFI partition created by Windows only has 100MB, as shown in the screenshot below (in Portuguese).

This may be preventing the Installer from creating the necessary files and folders in the EFI partition.

My ultimate goal with the installation of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics was to update the BIOS. I've successfully achieved that by following this workaround [content removed].

Can you please confirm the size of your partitions, particularly the EFI one?

Thanks in advance!

@Ddinis,

My EFI partition is 100 MB. It seems to me that when Windows is freshly installed from MS media creation center, its size is 100 MB by default. The combined size of \Boot and \Microsoft folders is roughly 31 MB upon installation of Windows 10 (see the screenshot of my ssd drive). Win10 and Win11 basically have the same EFI partition.

When the Diag's UEFI is installed to my EFI, the used size of EFI partition is increased to 66 MB, so the size of the Diag's UEFI (the \EFI\HP folder) is about 35 MB (66 - 31 =35).  As seen in the screenshot in my previous post, almost all files in the \EFI\HP folder are very small and the \HP\BIOS folder is empty.

The Diag's UEFI provides not just Firmware Management but also let you test the integrity of the variety of the hardware when Windows doesn't start. This is a very useful tool. See the link below.

I don't think that a failure of your attempt to install the Diag's UEFI has anything to do with the unused size of EFI partition. It's probably because of an installation glitch of some type. HP driver website fo your model shows Diag's UEFI V. 8.2.0.0. You can install this version if you wish to install  Diag's UEFI in the future.
