Hello All,

I have been trying to get my laptop setup with a docking station for dual displays.  I thought the USB C 3.1 port would be fine to simply order a USB Docking station.  I guess I was wrong...

I ordered this Docking Station: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z53139N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But when I connect the displays to the HDMI ports on the Dock and then connect the dock to my laptop the displays are not detected.

I have seen other folks ask similar questions and I have seen the link to the Plugable Docking Station.  Before I send back the one I already have I just want to make sure 2 things:

1) Can I get the one I already have to work?

2) Will the Plugable Docking Station truly work with the HP Pavilion?

I have to say I am a little disappointed at how difficult it has been to find a docking solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Also, I will update this thread with my solution.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello All,

OK after a bit of research I found a solution.

I installed the Displaylink drivers then I purchased the following Dock:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CRSH25X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Once I did this the system worked great.  I now have a dual monitor setup:IMG_20200124_155107.jpg

Thanks for all your help & tips on how to fix this issue.

Nearly all HP Pavilion notebooks don't have docking port therefore you can't get a docking station for your machine or for HP Pavilions.The specs of your machine is

    https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06474274

which shows it has

  • 1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C™ (Data Transfer Only, 5 Gb/s signaling rate);
  • 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (Data Transfer Only);
  • 1 AC smart pin;
  • 1 HDMI 1.4b;
  • 1 headphone/microphone combo;
  • 1 RJ-45

As you can see, its USB-C port does NOT support video out. At this stage, a docking station using USB-A ports still is a good choice. If you wish to have 2 or more external monitors, please enter your requirement on the following link and it will find for you few options on market today including some HP products:

or try following HP docks

Thanks for the quick response.

I did notice the caveat about data only for the USB C port AFTER I ordered a Docking Station and it didn't work.

So if I understand correctly, if I install the DisplayLink drivers and purchase this station:

https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-usb-c-a-universal-dock-g2

I should have a good docking solution and also have dual monitors?

Thanks,
Dave

Please check the compatible list, your machine is NOT on that list (you can see dull list when click Specs tab).

Hello Banhien,

Thanks again for the response.

You are right I did see that my machine was not listed on the compatibility list.  However, I thought that since this was a Docking Station that was based on DisplayLink and if I install the Drivers then it should work?

This is where I get confused because I thought that DisplayLink was supposed to address the issue with machines like mine?

Thanks,

Dave
