HP Pavilion 15-e039tx Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion 15-e039tx Notebook PC, and I’m currently using BIOS version Insyde F.28 (dated 14-Mar-2017). I’d like to downgrade to version F.24A.

🔍 Issue:

The laptop originally came with an AMD Radeon HD 8670M (2GB) graphics card. However, it’s no longer being detected in Device Manager—only the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is showing up. Along with that, the AMD GPU is overheating even when idle, which wasn’t the case before.

🧩 Background:

  • The issue began after updating the BIOS from F.24A to F.28.
  • A local technician identified the AMD GPU as the heating source and suggested that the BIOS update likely caused it.
  • He recommended bypassing the GPU, but I’m not comfortable with that workaround.
  • I believe rolling back the BIOS could help, as the laptop worked fine before the update. But he cautioned against downgrading due to risks of system instability or bricking.

🧪 My Attempts:

  • Found and downloaded the F.24A BIOS from HP’s SoftPaq archive: sp69897.exe

             https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69501-70000/sp69897.exe

  • Verified compatibility by confirming the board ID (1970) via hex editor.
  • Created a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive using HP’s BIOS utility.
  • Tried the BIOS recovery process with Windows + B / Windows + V + Power Button.
  • Unfortunately, the laptop only blinked the Caps Lock key twice and didn’t proceed with recovery.
  • May be any downgrade locks is preventing bios rollback but not sure.

💡 Notes:

  • I’ve upgraded the laptop with SSD and additional RAM, so no previous BIOS image is stored.
  • Aside from the GPU issue, the system works well—I really don’t want to discard it since it’s the first laptop I purchased with my own earnings, and it holds great sentimental value.

🙏 Request:

Are there any reliable and safe methods to downgrade the BIOS so the AMD GPU can be detected again and stop overheating?

Thank you so much for any help or suggestions you can provide!

Older version

Download

Type: BIOS
Version: F.24 Rev.A
Operating systems: Windows 8 (64-bit)  also for Windows 10
Release date: Nov 28, 2014
File name: sp69897.exe(15.6 MB)

Note: Your machine has Intel processor, not AMD. as shown : https://www.amazon.in/HP-Pavilion-15-e039TX-15-6-inch-Laptop/dp/B00K6BT7FW

Hi @Banhien

Thank you for your response—I truly appreciate your effort and guidance.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far after going through your suggestions:

📥What I Did:

  • Downloaded the BIOS ( File name: sp69897.exe(15.6 MB) ) as suggested by you.
  • Created a USB recovery drive using the file.
  • Followed this recovery process:
    1. Turned off the laptop and connected the charger.
    2. Plugged in the USB port.
    3. Held Win + B (also tried Win + V) and pressed the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
    4. Waited 1–2 minutes for recovery to begin.

⚠️What Happened:

  • The screen stayed blank.
  • Caps Lock started blinking twice, then a pause, and repeated this pattern continuously.
  • Same results occurred with both Win+B and Win+V combinations.

@Banhien - You can find the full and accurate configuration of my laptop at the link below, which corresponds exactly to my model:

HP Pavilion 15-e039tx - Flipkart

🔍My Questions:

  1. Is there something I might be missing in the bios downgrade recovery setup?
  2. "Did I follow the instructions correctly as you intended in your previous response?"
  3. Or Do I need to update to BIOS version F.28 Rev.A instead of downgrade to F.24A

from the Source link you shared, considering that my current BIOS is already F.28

so, the AMD GPU can be detected again and stop overheating?

Your further help would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks in advance!

Again, your machine uses INTEL CPU, not ADM  (as shown on your link):

therefore F.28 is the latest BIOS

Hello @banhien – You're correct that the main processor in my PC is an Intel Core i5, and I'm not experiencing any problems with it. The issue lies specifically with the AMD graphics processor 8670M.

I’d like to briefly summarize the problem once again.

  • I’m using an HP Pavilion 15-E039TX Notebook PC, which originally came with an AMD Radeon HD 8670M (2GB) graphics processor as listed in the product specs (Please See the product specifications screenshot)
  • After updating the BIOS from version F.24A to F.28, the AMD GPU is no longer detected in Device Manager. specs (Please See the Current Sate Device manager screenshot)
  • Only the integrated Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 shows up in Device Manager.
  • Additionally, the AMD Radeon 8670M card is overheating even while idle—an issue that was not present before the BIOS update.
  • When the system was running on BIOS version F.24A, the discrete AMD GPU was detected and functioning normally.

Given that these problems began after updating the BIOS, I would like to downgrade back to BIOS version F.24A. If a rollback is possible for this model, I kindly request guidance on the correct and safe method to perform the downgrade.

Thank you in advance for your support and expertise.
