Pavilion 15-n215si
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Hi people,

I am buying a HP Pavilion 15-n215si laptop from a friend of mine, there's nothing wrong with the laptop. But me being a tinkering IT guy I want to upgrade some of the components in an effort to get the most out of it. I have already found 2x 8GB 1866MHz RAM modules to replace the standard 2x 4GB 1600MHz units. But my first question is this, can this laptop run 1866MHz or not? I know it will run the 2x 8GB modules, I'm just not sure about the faster speeds.

Secondly I want to replace the DVD-RAM Drive with an OptiBay type hard drive holder so that I can replace the standard 1TB HDD with a 128GB SSD and yet still have the 1TB as a secondary drive. I haven't used a DVD-RAM drive in ages because all of my DVD's and CD are either ISO Images or the movies are ripped onto my other hdd's. So my question is this, firstly I have to confirm that the optical drive uses a SATA Port. And secondly does anyone know where i would be ablr to find such a drive holder.

Then just out of curiosity, is it at all possible to upgrade more than just the RAM and HDD? For example can one upgrade the CPU or Graphics Card at all? If so where would i find the parts?

Lastly, can anyone please point me in the right direction to find a parts list with part numbers for all of the parts on the laptop, like if the bezel arround the display gets cracked or damaged or i need to replace some of the screws or whatever the case might be.

Any advice on these matters would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
BigFluff

Sounds like you need to buy a new machine because adding and replacing parts for your machine would cost more than buying new machine with better specs. The following link shows specs of your machine:

        https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04090963

1. List of all parts: Unfortunately not available as shown:

      http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=G2A98EA

2. RAM:  It may accept 1866MHz RAM but won't run at 1866MHz speed. Just thinking about a racing car runs on normal city streets using normal speed limit laws. Please use the following parts

    8 GB memory module PC3L 12800 1600Mhz part # 693374-001
    8 GB memory module PC3L 12800 1600Mhz part # 670034-001

Note: due to the cache size (for Intel RST technology), your machine only supports up to 12GB, not 16GB.

3. ODD to HDD adapter: Your machine has ODD (CD/DVD drive):

  • Fixed
  • Serial ATA
  • 9.5 mm tray load

that means it supports SATA II and can be used with 9.5mm adapter such as

         https://www.amazon.co.uk/Salcar-Adapter-laptops-Universal-aluminum/dp/B00G4UZEKG

4. CPU: This item is not upgradable, you need new motherboard and not available fot thr series.

5. GPU or video: No, it is one component which CPU as 4 above.

In short, RAM and HDD are your choices and they are workbale. Other than that, well, buy a new machine.

Regards.
