I have a HP Pavilion  G72-c55DX laptop  It has a Intel Pentium P6100 2.00GHz CPU on it can I upgrade it to anything faster?

That part is NOT a CPU/Processor, it is a (HD)Discrete architecture with media card reader 1.1

Page 83 of the manual shows you a list and the top CPU of the series is

 

         Intel Arrandale i7–620M Processor (2.66 GHz, 4 MB total L3 cache, 1066 MHz)—Dual Core 35 W part # 587259–001

 

Your machine has

 

         Pentium Arrandale P6100 Processor (2.0 GHz, 3 MB, L3 cache 100 MHz) (for models 1.1 and 1.2 only) part # 613587-001

so something like this Intel Core i5-460M 2.53GHz Socket G1 Laptop CPU - SLBZW  would work in the laptop?

Did you read read the manual. BIOS may only allow CPU's on the list.

I tried the Intel Core i5-3230M   and it did not work powered on but shows blank screen (can not get external to work

My motherboard numbers and old CPU numbers are below

Does that mean that anything on the list will work  on my motherboard that is board number 615849-001 like the Intel Core i5–460M Processor  as it is listed in the section as shown below   as the rest are the Intel Arrandale  type that are kind of high priced

Intel Core i5-3230M is few generations later, it WON'T work.
