HP Pavilion Plus 14-eh0063nw
Microsoft Windows 11

I need to change the default action for action keys back to F1-F12 - without need to press Fn button.

It was before possible by "actions keys mode" setting in BIOS which is now missing - in F.15 BIOS.

Pls help!

@MaciekSzn, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’re trying to restore the default function key (F1–F12) behavior on your HP Pavilion Plus 14-eh0063nw, but the “Action Keys Mode” option is no longer visible in the BIOS after updating to version F.15. Let’s work on restoring the desired functionality.

The “Action Keys Mode” setting in BIOS allows users to toggle whether the F1–F12 keys work as standard function keys or as media/action keys (like brightness, volume, etc.) without pressing Fn.

This option has disappeared in BIOS version F.15, which seems to be a common behavior in some newer BIOS versions.

Suggested Workarounds:

Option 1: Check HP BIOS Configuration Utility in Windows

  • Press Win + S, type HP BIOS Configuration Utility (or HP System Event Utility), and open it if available.
  • Look under Advanced Settings for “Action Keys Mode” or similar.
  • If available, toggle it OFF to restore F1–F12 as default.

If it’s not installed, download and install the HP System Event Utility for your model from the HP Drivers page: Official HP® Support

Option 2: Try Fn + Esc or Fn + Shift + Lock

Some HP laptops support toggling function key behavior using a key combination:

  • Press and hold Fn then tap Esc, or
  • Try Fn + Shift or Fn + Caps Lock (depending on keyboard layout)
  • This sometimes works even when BIOS settings are hidden.

Option 3: Roll Back BIOS (Advanced Users Only)

If the above options don’t work and this setting is crucial:

You can consider rolling back to the earlier BIOS version where the setting was present.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Dear @Max3Aj,

Thanks your these suggestions.

Unfortunately issue not solved yet.

Option 1: Check HP BIOS Configuration Utility is not working - have downloaded and installed this utility, but it's not working - opening for like 1 second, displays some text error and closes - can't spot what the error is.

HP System Event Utility don't have any configuration possibility, it only shows information and "Advanced" button opens msinfo32.exe

Option 2: Try Fn + Esc or Fn + Shift + Lock - have tried, nothing changes

Option 3: Roll Back BIOS - where to find old bios versions and which was the last with this setting?

Anyway - this is essential feature of the laptop to be able to use function keys as primary function.

Please escalate this issue to BIOS development team or create separate configuration utility like LENOVO or DELL to be able to use this nice laptop as before.

Don't really understand the reason of removing this BIOS setting.

As an advanced IT user - this is essential issue seriously impacting daily usage / work.

Thank you beforehand!
