I'm considering upgrading the storage space on my laptop. I want to know if I can install an NVMe Gen 4 to it.

I'm aware that Gen 4s are backward compatible with devices that only support Gen 3s. However, if a Gen 4 is put into a device that only supports Gen 3s, the SSD will run at Gen 3 speeds.

I want to know if the computer can handle the speed of a Gen 4 SSD.

i.e. would a Gen 4 NVMe SSD be an upgrade compared to a Gen 3 on this computer? Or will they run at similar speeds?

The M.2 port will only support PCIe Gen 3.0 transfer speeds. The added potential speed of a Gen 4 device would not be utilized.

Thanks for the response! While we're at it, could you tell me whether another computer of mine will support 4th Gen NVMe?

Its model number is 15-ef2127wm. It's also posted on my profile.

Not that one either. Gen 4 compatible HP laptops are all issued in the last year or so...12th gen or so and higher CPUs.

Thanks again. I really appreciate all your help on this. If you wouldn't mind answering one last question I would be very grateful.

In my searching for info on this upgrade I discovered the Intel Optane H20 NVME. Would that drive be compatible with the first unit I mentioned, the Pavilion x360? It looks like the H20 is a pretty good upgrade from the H10.

Optane drives serve a different function than NVME storage. They are generally smaller in capacity and used to accelerate another drive, usually a mechanical hard drive but an NVME Optane can actually accelerate a SATA SSD. The one you ask about however is a multifunction device that has both a big simple storage component and a smaller capacity Optane module on the same SSD. It does appear that the 14-dw1000 supports this type of dual function M.2 NVME SSD.

Thanks again! The SSD currently in the machine is an Optane H10 (prior generation) with only 16GB Optane and 256GB NVME. It seems like an H20 with 32GB and 500GB would improve things considerably. We're going to upgrade the RAM so I figured while we have it open might as well increase the storage capacity. Speeding up the SSD is just the bonus!
