HP Pavilion x360 - 13-s100nv (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product Number: P1S34EA

Hello,

I have a question upon possible RAM and SSD Upgrade. I bought this device from Greece and have not used it for long time. Now, I like to use this HP Pavilion notebook as back up device.  As many of you know, it’s an old device so I like to upgrade RAM and SSD to have better performance. I am confused here; while I am checking the Device Specs/HW parts using different software; e.g., CPU-Z, Speccy and HWiNFO64 providing me inaccurate information.

  1. When I run Task Manager > Performance > Memory it shows DDR3
  2. When I run HWiNFO64 it shows Memory Type as DDR3. Also, Speccy shows RAM as DDR3

But I am confused here… When I run CPU-Z, it shows memory DDR3L. As per service guide of affected device: Memory supports for DDR3L as well HP support webpage showing DDR3L

To make sure, I lately called a service point to clarify and it was told me Product Number: P1S34EA supports for DDR3. Before I order new SSD and 8GB RAM, I have to make sure if it supports for either DDR3 or DDR3L. Someone on reddit claims that can order DDR3 and use without issue however Module Nominal Voltage (VDD) not same. One supports 1.5 V while another supports 1.35 V

May I ask you to help me if anyone knows this device and which one (RAM) to order?

  • Going to buy SanDisk 500 GB SSD and Kingston 8GB 1600MHz

And, last one .. As I know there is only one RAM/Memory slot, HOWEVER HP Maintenance and Service Guide claims Memory 2 SODIMM slots DDR3L-1600 [Support for DDR3L-1600 Support for dual channel Supports up to 16384-MB maximum on-board system memory.]

Hi:

You should use DDR3L-1600 (1.35V) memory.

There isn't any notebook that I know of with a Skylake processor that uses DDR3 (1.5V) memory.

DDR3L memory can run at either 1.5V or 1.35V, because in order to classify as DDR3 memory, it has to support the 1.5V DDR3 standard.

DDR3 (1.5V) memory will not run at 1.35V so it will not work in your notebook.

SSD...you will need to replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD.

M.2 SATA SSD's are only supported in the models that came with them from the factory.

@qtokr -- As I know there is only one RAM/Memory slot

Are you sure? Maybe, the second slot is visible only after you remove the SODIMM ?

Note that SPECCY can be wrong.  On one computer of mine, it reports "minus-one" free RAM sockets ?!

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.  So, I  can order Kingston KVR16LS11/8 - 8GB 1600MHz

Why only M2 SATA SSD? That's another confusing part now. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04825536.pdf

Support for 6.35-cm (2.5-in) hard drives in 7.2-mm (.28-in) and 7.0-mm (.28-in) thicknesses Support for Accelerometer hard drive protection Support for the following single hard drive configurations:

● 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 7.2-mm
● 750-GB, 5400-rpm, 7.2-mm
● 500-GB, 5400-rpm, 7.0-mm

Support for 500-GB, 5400-rpm, 7.0-mm + 8-GB NAND Hybrid hard drive

Support for M2 SATA-3 next generation form factor (NGFF) 128-MB triple-level cell (TLC) solid-state drive

I was to buy Samsung or SanDisk 500 GB SATA 3 SSD but seems wont be compatible.

- Haha, I will never ever buy any HP product anymore. I really did not like, but now hate it. Even, I called HP Authorized Service Provider and they offered DDR3 8 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD / Sata 3 even they gave me price list.

Technician says something else , whereas http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04825536.pdf claims all different.

Well, I did not use Speccy before ... and after running the program I was confused. But, HWiNFO64 and CPU-Z are the quite popular ones and both provide different info. ( .see the attachments.)

Yesterday, I had a call with service provider (Authorized HP service.) and a technician told me there is only one slot after I gave him S/N  and Product Number. So then, I was informed all wrong. What's worse they even gave me price list.

You're very welcome.

What I wrote is you need to buy a 2.5" SATA SSD, and not a M.2 SSD.

HP uses different motherboards for notebooks that come with SATA HDD's, and those that come with M.2 SSD's.

Since your notebook came with a 2.5" mechanical hard drive, there is no M.2 slot.

See chapter 3 of the service manual.

If you have verified that the 8 GB Kingston memory will work, then that would be fine.

I know that this model Crucial memory should work for your notebook.
