HP Probook 450 G10
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I have a  brand new HP ProBook 450 G10 running Windows 11. I have noticed that the battery drains while it is powered off. All drivers and bios are up to date. It went from 100% to 80% percent while being powered down for 8 or 9 days. Every time i turn on laptop after not being used i see drop in battery percents. I have older Dell 3501 and I never had any problems with the battery. Please help me what can i do. I have nothing connected to USB ports.

Hello adexonis.

This is normal behaviour for these modern business laptops. Although we're not entirely sure of the reasons behind this, the newer the system, the more it discharges when fully powered off. My 650 G1 takes roughly two weeks to reach the low battery threshold (93%) that will initiate a charge cycle, while my 650 G8 begins charging every two days -meaning it loses about 3-4% per day. In fact, with the original 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD it only discharged 2% every day, but this doubled when I upgraded to more than double the original RAM & storage sizes....

There is nothing to do. The complexity of the motherboards on these recently manufactured systems causes a lot of battery drain when shut down. The only side effect is that your battery will go through more discharge cycles at a faster rate. This is progress for you.

Take care!

I've never had similar problems with laptops, this is just too much. A laptop that is turned off and uses up so much battery is truly incredible. Literally turned off in a bag without any USB accessories can easily use up half the battery in a couple of days. That doesn't seem normal to me. I have a Dell Vostro 3501 i3 11th gen also new that doesn't use up 2% in a bag in a month. I really can't believe it and I won't accept that this is normal. So every time before using a brand new laptop I need to plug it into the power to charge it to be safe that it doesn't run out for a few days, and I haven't used it at all? Why and what uses up the battery if the laptop is turned off, not on standby, it's nothing but just turned off without any additional peripherals and USB charging is turned off.

Thanks, but that's not the answer I was expecting, unfortunately

I've never had a laptop that got discharged by only 2% in a whole month. I have a 25 year old Omnibook and it discharges more than that. I have to admit your experience with Dell is interesting...

I had a lenovo before dell, which also didn't drain the battery anywhere near as much as this HP. I'm specifically talking about this HP 450 G10 model. Isn't it too much that after 14 days it drains 40-50% of the battery in my bag. So before I go on a trip I have to recharge my laptop to make sure it won't let me down on the road? Honestly, a new laptop that drains more battery when turned off than when turned on doesn't make any sense to me. I think something is wrong with the hardware or something in the bios needs to be changed definitely.

HP should speak out about these things. I'm neither the first nor the last to have this, let's call it a problem.

Sorry, one more thing, I didn't quite understand how much percent your 650 G1 consumes if it's turned off for about two weeks or more?

It goes from 100% to 93%. So, 7% in 14 days. 0.5% per day....

I can understand that, but this model uses about 40% in 2 weeks, which is really too much... Does anyone with the same model have a similar or the same problem, I would like to hear your opinion?

What is your OS and did you turn off the USB power supply or adjust something else in bios?

Thanks

I found some posts from other users complaining about this. If there were some magic fix for this I would certainly offer it to you.

Sometimes these kinds of issues can be remedied by unplugging all power sources and removing one or two ("stuck") capacitors that cause the problem. But I can't seriously recommend this as a solution to a high drain issue, I have done it several times on bricked systems.
