My Surface Book will not pick up my HP Simple Save 1TB. The device is powered on and I have tried the following:
- Multiple USB Ports
- Restarting both harddrive and computer
- Checked Device Manager (not shown, nor are there any unknown devices that could potentially be updated)
- Checked Disk Management (in Computer Management). No other disks are visible.
I have no other backups beyond what is currently on this external drive. Please help me get this recognized by my Surface Book.
Thank you!

Hi! @n3wtonian, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!
I understand you have simple pass issues on your PC.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.
As you mentioned you have issues getting the HP simple save hard drive recognized on a Windows 10 PC.
I have checked the specifications of the simple save software and please find the supported operating system by the simple save software.
Supported Operating Systems
• Windows ®
7
• Windows Vista ®
• Windows XP
Note: Compatibility may vary depending on user’s hardware configuration and operating system. HP SimpleSave
software only supports Windows.
So a Windows 10 PC is not compatible to use this software.
Refer the simple save user guide to know more information.
Also, you can try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.
Go to "Tools" on the menu bar at the top
Select "Add Ons"
Go to "Plug-Ins"
Find HP SimplePass, then make sure the option "Always Activate" (far right side) is selected.
If the solution provided worked for you, please mark accepted solution for this post.
Hope this answers your query!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Can you please clarify where to access the menu with the "Tools" option? Specifically, is this discoverable within Windows or is this part of a piece of HP software I need to download?
Thanks!

@n3wtonian, Thanks for your quick response and time.
I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.
Yes, you would need to install HP simple save software to get the hard drive detected on your PC.
HP simple save software cannot be downloaded from any website, as the software is inbuilt into the external hard drives.
However, since the software is not compatible with Windows 10 PC, you cannot install on your PC.
Also, U can try formatting the hard drive on your PC by going to disk management.
Connect the hard drive to a Windows 7 PC and go to disk management under computer management.
Check if the hard drive is detected If the hard drive is getting detected right click on the drive and click format.
However, you might not be able to use the simple save software again to backup data.

I also have a portable HP simple save drive and backed up all my documents on there. Now I can't access them since I upgraded my computer. Are you telling us that it is impossible to do that now? Other manufacturers upgrade drivers or develop software for download. This seems like really poor customer service to have to go find a windows 7 computer and transfer files to a different portable drive! Is this the solution you are suggesting?
