My HP Spectre keeps overheating and crashing (or at least thats what Im assuming happens). The laptop is only 2 months old. It wigs out doing simple tasks even with no tabs open and having battery optimization turned on for everything. Unless I use my 3 fan cooling pad, It overheats before the fans wake up to cool the laptop, even on a flat clean surface. I'm on BIOS 14 and have resulted to turning the fan setting in bios to "always on" for the time being. Help please.

Hi @Michaelc14,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
Overheating and crashing issues on a new HP Spectre laptop can be concerning. Here are several troubleshooting steps to help identify and potentially resolve the problem:
Troubleshooting Overheating Issues
Check for Ventilation:
- Ensure the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to allow proper ventilation.
- Avoid using the laptop on soft surfaces like beds or couches that can block air vents.
Clean the Vents:
- Dust and debris can block the vents and cause overheating. Use compressed air to gently clean the vents.
Update BIOS and Drivers:
- Outdated BIOS or drivers can cause overheating. Make sure your BIOS and all drivers are up-to-date.
- Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest BIOS and drivers for your model.
Check for Background Processes:
- High CPU usage from background processes can cause overheating. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for any processes that are using excessive CPU. End any unnecessary processes.
Adjust Power Settings:
- Lowering your power settings can help reduce heat generation.
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select a balanced or power-saving plan.
Use a Cooling Pad:
- A cooling pad can help improve airflow and reduce the temperature of your laptop.
Check for Malware:
- Malware can cause high CPU usage and overheating. Run a full system scan using a reputable antivirus program.
Kindly check the next set of steps in the next post.

Hi @Michaelc14,
Please find the next set of steps below.
Preventing Overheating and Crashing
Keep the Laptop Clean:
- Regularly clean the vents and ensure the laptop is free from dust and debris.
Monitor Temperatures:
- Use software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor the internal temperatures. This can help identify if the laptop is consistently running too hot.
Update Operating System:
- Make sure your operating system is up-to-date with the latest patches and updates.
Limit Intensive Applications:
- Avoid running multiple heavy applications simultaneously. This can reduce CPU load and prevent overheating.
If the Problem Persists
If your laptop continues to overheat and crash despite following the above steps, it could be a hardware issue. Given that your laptop is only two months old, it should still be under warranty.
