HP Spectre x360 -13
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Very disappointed in my HP Spectre x360 13" screen.  The charging system is haywire.  This was supposed to be a high end computer, with an SSD.  It boots in seconds.  But it won't charge up.  it used to hang at 39%, but now it hangs a 7%.  I did a lot of research, exploring fixes various people have discovered including disconnecting the battery and deleting the 2 battery drivers from device manager.  Nothing worked.  The led on the side of the charging port randomly blinks orange, or white.  Nothing logical.  When plugged in to power, the systray shows it's plugged in, but it doesn't charge.  I'm very frustrated.  I don't want to buy another motherboard because so many people have this problem that it would just recur.  Money poorly spent.  Really HP should face a class action lawsuit for this design flaw.  Not sure I'll ever buy HP again, probably not, though I do have a bigger HP laptop I use for Solidworks CAD design and it's been flawless.  I'm just so disappointed to have to spend another $1500 for a computer when this one, except the charging circuit, works fine.  Maybe I'll just do some self-therapy and hit social media on this junk.  Some of the problem computers mention "USB charging".  I'm not sure what that means....my computer charges through a traditional AC adaptor and a round power plug.  Whatever, it doesn't work.

PS:  I've replaced the battery at least 3 times.  The original battery swelled up so badly the mouse pad wouldn't work anymore.  Maybe that damaged the motherboard.  Fire hazard??

@Ripfree I understand your concern and I will bring your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP.

Although, I'll need some private information from you in order to create a case for you.

If you search this site, you will find MANY threads about the Spectre series not charging... almost all of them are closed/locked.

The first thing to do is press and hold the power button (starting from off) for at least 30 seconds, don't let go... that fairly often fixes the charging behavior.

Also, charging from usb means you can have a usb type C charger, look them up. Your USB C port should support PD (Power Delivery)... You can find docks that have the single connector for power and to give you external video, sound, usb, ethernet ports.

anyway, my Spectre was acting differently after almost every major Windows update, would charge from the barrel but not the usb, then the opposite, would only charge from the usb and not the barrel, and a couple of times not charge at all... be sure to do your BIOS updates. My Spectre has finally calmed down, but I am also running the Windows Insider Next Version release (call me crazy).

Also often only one channel speaker works, and the power reset usually fixes that...\

This will be the last HP I buy for a while, just over 45 years my experience with HP has been good hardware, screwed up software and firmware... and I am an ex HP employee!

Good luck!

Greg
