HP Spectre x360 Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

the following issue occurs: My Laptop shuts down without warning at about 50% battery level while not connected to power. Just black screen and doesnt start unless i connect the power again. (So I figured the battery is broken...but:

I use a HP Spectre x360 Convertible  13-4104ng  - Prod. No. K3D43EA#ABD - Windows 10 64-bit.

The charging process from 50% to 100% takes the same time as it always did and the time the laptop runs from 100% to 50% is regular (takes a few hours).

I did the HP Battery Check it says battery is ok - Cycle coutner: 579 / 1000

I tried the manual calibration  as recommendend by HP https://support.hp.com/de-de/document/c04726319https://support.hp.com/ph-en/document/c04700771

a) Anybody has an idea why my laptop still shuts down at 50% - my guess is a broken battery which would fit the symptoms (and the fact that my warranty ran out just a few months ago 😉 ) ?

b) If my battery is dead (for whatever reason) is the cause the battery itself or could it be the charger?

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.

Let's try these steps:

Hard reset:

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.

3) Remove the Battery. ( not for Built-in Battery computer )

4) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.

5) Plug-in the Adapter and put the Battery back into the computer if it's a (removable battery)

6) Try to turn on the computer and check,

If the test passes, continue with these steps:

1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.

2. Expand batteries.

3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.

4. Shut down the computer.

5. Disconnect the charger.

6. Remove the battery.

7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.

8. Insert the battery only.

9. Attempt to turn the battery on. If the issue persists continue next step.

Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from the HP Support Assistant:  Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I believe that the Spectre notebook has an in-built battery so your suggestion (Hard reset)  is flawed.

My laptop is only 3 years old and is acting up (shuts down, no warning randomly, doesn't always fully charge despite updates etc.)

HP does not offer/ sell replacement batteries and advice is redundant 😞

hi Nat21, did you find any solution for this problem? I have the exact same problem with the spectre x360

Hi Tmsw,

I was told by 2 IT guys that the battery needs to be replaced, so I bought one on Ebay but have not fitted it in yet. I can let you know when it is done (probably after Christmas) and if that made any difference!

Thank you Nat21 for your reply, I would really appreciate if you let me know if it worked well. I hope the new battery fixes the problem 🙂

So I got a replacement for my battery (Green Cell) but, whilst it claimed to be fitting HP Spectre, it did not work.

I then called HP customer service who confirmed that we could not purchase a battery replacement but could send it in to have it fixed at a cost of £350!
Not to mention that the mousepad started playing up last week - cost for fixing it: £400.

I’m really upset and disappointed with the quality of HP laptops, especially since I have had mine only since 2016! Will be buying another laptop - not HP!
