Just notice that my laptop is swollen around the middle of the unit. I suspect the battery is expanding, and now I'm worried it could explode and/or start a fire. Seems like there are a lot of cases on the forums about this.
I'm hoping HP can help me fix it before something gets damaged or someone gets hurt.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
There is cause for concern - "worry" is not necessary if you are proactive to reduce the chances of the situation getting worse.
What?
At the least, the battery will fail.
At the worst, yes, there can be physical damage and loss of data.
HP will assist if the computer is still in Warranty.

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery – Sealed / Internal Battery
- Swollen battery might be hiding OR there might be evidence that the battery has inflated. For example, notebook case warps or won’t close, touch-pad stops working, “odd” bulging near the keyboard.
- If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced. There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.

What if?
If you do need help changing out the battery, a competent technician or skilled friend or family member might help.
Professional replacement - Comments
Battery replacement is not generally expensive as long as there is not other damage due to the bloating.
IF the tech claims to find damage, ask to see it -- most techs are honest -- that might not include everyone.

Welcome to the HP support community.
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

My computer was out of warranty. I had to pay $250 for battery replacement and negotiated a loaner PC in the interim. The fix was quick but I'm pretty unhappy that I was charged anything. I feel like this was a manufacturer defect. I wonder if there is a class action/recall possibility on this issue due to the widespread occurrence.
