I just purchased the HP USB C Dock G5. When I first plugged it in it was able to boot the laptop from shutdown mode but after I unplugged it to use with another laptop it no longer boots laptop when I push the dock's power button. Everything else works fine. It has the latest firmware update and I have tried resetting the dock but nothing works.

@bcrob4, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP USB C Dock G5.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

If your HP USB-C Dock G5 no longer boots your laptop when you press the dock's power button, here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Verify Connections:

    • Ensure the dock is securely connected to your laptop via the USB-C cable.
    • Make sure the power adapter is plugged into the dock and a working power outlet.
  2. Check Laptop Power Settings:

    • Ensure that the laptop's BIOS and power settings allow the USB-C port to initiate a boot from an external device like the dock.
    • Access the BIOS or UEFI firmware settings by restarting your laptop and pressing the relevant key (usually Esc, F2, F10, or Del) during startup.
  3. Update BIOS/UEFI:

    • Ensure your laptop's BIOS/UEFI is up-to-date, as an outdated BIOS can sometimes result in connection problems with peripherals like docks.
  4. Reset the Dock Again:

    • Disconnect the dock from power and laptop.
    • Wait for about a minute, then reconnect everything.
  5. Test Power Button Functionality:

    • Try pressing the dock's power button within accessibility; sometimes deliberate, firm presses yield better results.
    • If possible, test with another compatible HP laptop to determine if the issue persists across multiple devices.
  6. Driver and Firmware Updates:

    • Re-confirm that your dock has the latest firmware.
    • Check if there are updates for your laptop’s USB-C drivers through the Device Manager and HP Support Assistant.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
