Hello HP Community,
I wanted to clarify some confusion regarding NVMe SSD support for the HP Victus 15-fb0xxx. While some sources suggest it only supports Gen3, I contacted HP Support,PD
Live Chat
and they confirmed it does support NVMe Gen4 SSDs!
I've attached a screenshot of the chat log with HP Support as proof.
I hope this helps anyone looking to upgrade their SSD!

The service manual (on page 2) for 15-fb0000 and HP specs for 15-fb0000 series both indicate that notebooks come with a PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot supporting NVMe gen3 SSDs.

Models in 15-fb1000 series come with a gen4 M.2 slot.

You can still install a gen4 NVMe SSD, but it won't run at gen4 designed speeds from the gen3 slot.

Thank you very much for this detailed and helpful response, and for providing the links to the service manual and specifications. I appreciate you clarifying this.
This is a bit confusing for me, as I specifically contacted HP Support and they explicitly told me that my HP Victus 15-fb0xxx model does support NVMe Gen4 SSDs.
Given the official documentation you've linked and your explanation, it seems there's a clear contradiction between what official support told me and the information in the manuals. Could you perhaps shed more light on why there might be this discrepancy?
Just to confirm my understanding: If I install a Gen4 NVMe SSD (like the one I might purchase) in my 15-fb0xxx, it will function, but its speed will be capped at PCIe 3.0 speeds, rather than running at its full Gen4 potential. Is that correct?
Also, could you please check this link? This exact my laptop with S/N number: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/details/victus-by-hp-15.6-inch-gaming-laptop-15-fb0000/model/21...
Thank you again for your time and assistance!
Best regards,
Sajjad

You are correct that a gen4 NVMe SSD will work in your model but won't run at its gen4 designed speeds.
See this thread where the person installed a Samsung 990 Pro gen4 NVMe in a 15-fb0xxx model and found it didn't run at " the speed prescribed by the ssd manufacturer."

I would say a gen4 NVMe with 7000 MB/s read speed would probably run around 3500 MB/s from a gen 3 slot.
You can install Crystal Disk Mark from this link and find the read/write speeds of a gen4 NVMe you install.

HP has released four generations of 15-fb models: 15-fb0000-15-fb3000. 15-fb1000 and higher series all support gen4 NVMe SSDs. Perhaps, HP Support you talked to somehow mistakenly thought your model would support gen4 SSDs.
