Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-s0000 (76T52AV)

Since last year September I have owned this laptop and have not had problems until about two months ago, when the first cases of the hall sensor being broken started showing: Some random flickering for a few seconds every few days. Ignoring this problem because it did not bother me too much was not a great idea, it gradually became worse up until yesterday where it started flickering instantly after boot. Today my laptop fully died, no light next to the power button.
On the HP forums and Reddit I have read that this is a known manufacturing defect that can be fixed by HP's service centres, but I have also read that their most common 'fix' is just to unplug the sensor, which reduces CPU performance. For my study and job I need the full performance out of my laptop and am scared to send it to a service centre for that reason.
Is there any fix I can do myself?

Hi @ezmodeboxey

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly. It’s genuinely frustrating when a hardware issue like the Hall sensor defect on your HP Victus 16-s0000 laptop escalates to the point of complete failure—especially when performance is critical for your work and studies.

What’s Happening with the Hall Sensor

The Hall sensor in your laptop is responsible for detecting lid position (open/closed). When it malfunctions, it can cause:

  • Screen flickering
  • False sleep triggers
  • Complete power failure
  • Throttled CPU performance if the sensor is disabled by service centers

Multiple users have reported that HP’s common service response is to disconnect the Hall sensor cable, which disables lid detection and limits CPU wattage to 40–45W, resulting in ~50% performance loss[1].

Can You Fix This Yourself?

Unfortunately, there is no safe or documented DIY fix for the Hall sensor issue that restores full functionality without risking further damage. The sensor is embedded in the lid assembly or motherboard, and tampering with it may void your warranty or worsen the issue.

However, here are a few things you can try:

1. BIOS and Firmware Update

Sometimes BIOS updates include sensor calibration fixes.

  • Visit the HP Victus 16-s0000 support page
  • Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and firmware updates

2. Disable Lid Sleep Actions Temporarily

This may reduce flickering if the sensor is intermittently misfiring.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does
  • Set “Do nothing” for both battery and plugged-in modes

Why DIY Repair Isn’t Recommended

  • The Hall sensor is not user-replaceable.
  • Disabling it manually may require motherboard disassembly.
  • Performance throttling is hardcoded in firmware when the sensor is disconnected.

What You Can Do Next

If your laptop is still under warranty, you may request a component-level repair rather than a sensor disconnect. You can reference similar cases from HP’s support community:

If you’d like help checking your warranty status or preparing documentation for a service request, I’d be glad to assist. Just let me know what you'd prefer.
