g6 2229TU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I am using  HP g6-2229TU, Product No C9M03PA (#ACJ) since 2013 without any issue. Now after using it for almost 4yr+, it getting much slower in day to day operation nowadays & producting much heat from the HDD, also, got some faulty sectors in HDD as well.

So I am looking for a upgradation, and want to upgrade its RAM as well as HDD. My questions are

1. As I know, this model can support up to 8GB of RAm & has 4gb (2*2) by default on board. So there is no vacant RAM slot left to upgrade. So, do I need to any one of those RAM from one of the slots available or remove both of the & use a single 8gb stick on any one of the slots? Also, kindly suggest me some supported & compatible RAM modules to buy for this model with matching speed, voltage & latency.

2. If I install an SSD, then do I have to remove the preinstalled 500GB HDD as well or I can install the SSD into the CD/DVD ROM area as nowdays those are not in use and I want to use the pre-installed HDD as well for data storage & backup purpose.

Kindly help me to find the supported RAM & SSD models which will be compatible with this model without any issue.

Expecting reply from the HP experts as well as any user who've used or using this same model & have upgraded any of these components.

Thanks in advance.

Here's the Service Manual:

Manual

I have done these upgrades on lots of models including some HP G6 notebooks.

This laptop predates and of the newer form factor gumstick drives in other words you can only install a 2.5 inch wide and 7mm or 9.5mm thick SATA hard drive or SSD.

You can get a caddy that will replace the optical drive and it will hold a hard drive but the optical drive SATA port is a lower speed port so you do not want to cripple an SSD that way. The best thing to do is to get an SSD to put in place of the main hard drive (see p. 42-47 of the Manual) and then put the spinner drive in the optical bay caddy.

optical caddy:

If your original hard drive has bad sectors you do not want to continue to trust it as it will eventually and perhaps very soon fail.

You cannot use a single 8 gig RAM stick as 8 gigs is the max total RAM and no single stick can exceed 4 gigs. Get 2 x 4 gig modules.

If you follow this advice you will max it to be as fast as you can make it.

Already checked before posting here. here is the result

but I cannot fully trust on their site so asked here for details & besides, I do not live in the USA. So can't purchase those guaranteed modules from them & here in India, those modules prices are insane.

 @Huffer

Firstly, thanks for your detailed reply. Appreciated.

I know that this laptop is pre dates as I mentioned that it's a 2013 model & I purchased it back in 2013, & using it for 4yrs+.

So, I presume, upgrading to relatively newer RAM and/or SSD will not cause any issue for anything related performance or compatibility?

And I do not fully understand this statement "...of the newer form factor gumstick drives...". Does this mean that the pre-installed HDD of this laptop is set/installed within a gum stick drive into this laptop?

And, do you know that which SATA port version/revision is used in this model? Is it SATA 2 or SATA 3?

I am low on budget & this laptop has 500gb HDD but I only use this laptop for my work so I do not need to store any large amount of data in it so I am planning to replace the HDD with a 120/128 GB SSD before by the same point & logic that you've also suggested.

Since I'm low on budget so am not considering Samsung at this time, can you suggest that in low budgeted SSD, which one is better within Kingstone, SanDisk, Corsair & Zotac?

HP Recommended

Well the RAM is DDR3-1600 not low voltage so anything you get with those specs is likely to work. I linked you to the exact HP module part number so try to match that as much as you can.

By gumstick drives I refer to the M.2 2280 form factor which is being used in laptops with 6th and 7th generation Intel processors. Your model is older and has no slot to use for installing such a thing. As such your only option is a regular, old school 2.5 inch wide and 7 mm thick form factor SSD. It will still be way way faster than a spinning mechanical hard drive.

All of the brands you mention except maybe Zotac are first line memory makers and I have even had good luck with Zotac SSDs when I have to get one for somebody on a budget. You cannot really go wrong. Your SATA bus I believe is SATA-II/3 gbps but again do not overthink that. A SATA-III SSD will adapt to work with it fine and it is not even noticeably slower for most activities except maybe full-on linear file transfers. Still boots and runs very fast.

Enjoy
